Afaik it’s John Malone’s other company, Liberty Media, that owns a shareholding in Discovery and he has been a director in the past.

perhaps not coming to Sky...

What's on TV advising extra coverage on Eurosport 3, 4 and 5 but only stating Virgin numbers for them (552-4).

Well of course, extra channels for Virgin Media - the old Liberty Global mothership working well, there.

Suppose us plebs with Sky will just have to do with Eurosport 1 & 2 and the BBC?

Did I miss the memo where Sky customers are now considered the plebs over Virgin customers?! You usually get these things first, not us.

After tense negotiations:

Dentsu owns the rights in 22 fairly warm countries... What do you do in that situation?

Sky uk is missing a lot of stuff which is available elsewhere, hardly surprises me this is not available on sky, it’s there in Germany, Poland and Turkey on the two sats I rescanned today.

Makes a change - normally us Virgin customers are the poor relations, by a long shot...

My original point being, that it really should have been in the IOC contract with Discovery Eurosport that the maximum coverage should be available across all of the main rights holders platforms.
Here in the UK - That would be the satellite/cable channels of Eurosport, and the hidious Eurosport player.

But to then go and fire up extra Olympic channels for Liberty Media's other properties and exclude others (irrespective of the additional BBC One/Two + RB coverage or not) does seem to be keeping alive the Olympic ideal at all.

So, you activate 2-4 extra channels to show the coverage? Fine, but you make those extra channels available to all subscribers, on all available platforms, in all territories where you broadcast.

I was hoping that BT might come to the rescue and put the extra channels it's got via BTTV onto the Sky platform for all existing BT Sport subscribers - but that may be a very forlorn hope.

Seems Eilidh Barbour and Radzi Chinyanganya will be al fresco for the overnight/breakfast coverage from Korea. Outstanding view though.

I doubt BT have the rights to be able to do that.

These are Eurosport's channels not BT's to deal as they would like with.

I didn't think there was any connection between Liberty and Eurosport?
.

There isn't. Eurosport is owned by Discovery Communications.

Sounds as if this could be a bit like Sochi (and Vancouver?) - I suspect they will use the camera RF whenever possible, apart from when the weather is too bad (if it ever is). Interesting that there's studio presentation from MediaCity in Salford too. ISTR that the BBC used a London virtual studio for 1998, can't remember if they also did in 2002.

I hadn't heard about the RF camera - though I had been told they weren't using the shopping trolley again this year.

From their hotel, they might be able to get a link up to the ski jump tower or the sliding centre, but I don't see Alpensia as being buzzing with fans, so it's probably just so they can get more (or varied) picturesque backgrounds.

It was -20c last week - fine at ground level for short periods, but I ventured up to the IBC roof, and the wind chill made it pretty harsh. They're going to be glad of their nice warm hotel room for a studio...

What's the coldest temperature (assume you wrap it up, shelter it from the wind etc.) you can typically run a handheld broadcast camera before you run into problems? Is it more about having mains power to avoid the battery failing, or do you have to take steps to protect the sensor and the LCD panel too? (I read that LCDs freeze/crack at around -30C, but you get problems above that with them becoming slow/unresponsive, edges going dark etc.)

Also I've seen at least one blog where people have been advised it's better to consider just leaving the camera outside in the cold, rather than continually bringing it back in and taking it out again, to avoid condensation damage.
