Strange - the PVR's we've had have never recorded the prompts and I don't think Sky+ does either.

It seems that (according to AV Forums) unlike Sky+ and Virgin V+ which record the raw MPEG bitstream, this recorder decodes the Freeview bitstream. Which means the button's recorded.

Anyway, I apologise for veering off-topic.

There are two differenty styles of PVR out there. The vast majority record selected streams (or PIDs) from the DVB-T transport stream (audio, video, subtitles etc.) losslessly.

This is very simple to implement and very cost effective. However the amount of space a recording takes is entirely based on the bitrate used by the broadcaster.

Other DVRs - particularly those integrated into DVD Recorders (but also Tivo) - work differently, particularly if they also have analogue tuners or accept analouge inputs. They have dedicated MPEG2 decoders which run at a fixed bitrate, and are fed by the uncompressed output of an analogue tuner or a Freeview digital tuner and MPEG2 encoder. This can often mean subtitles aren't recorded (or are burned in rather than optional - though some may transcode them to DVD spec subtitles). The upside is you can chose your recording quality and know how much space a given recording will take, the downside is that MHEG5 overlays are burned in and that the picture quality is reduced by the extra decode/recode. One advantage of this in an integrated DVD Recorder is that the re-encode is DVD compliant (the Freeview bitstreams don't have to be) and recordings made to hard disc can be copied to DVD much faster than real-time.

.... back to the Games

The lighting of Hazel Irvine for the highlights loop is atrocious. I know it's being done for effect, but it gives the impression that there's a 60W bulb (or it's low energy substitute!) in a 1950's living room dusty standard lamp providing the illumination.

The yellow/gold back drop looking much better than the blue though. Apart from the opening ceremony, has Sue done anything other than the figure skating yet - I thought she might have hosted last night considering there was no figure skating and Hazel had the night off.

If memory serves me right she presented yesterdays Alpine Skiing.

Well her Claire Balding disguise was very convincing then.

LOL - a tad unfair but quite funny.

Looking at the red button schedule today and it's clear how crucial losing that second stream on Freeview has been. Sky may have 4 or 5 streams, but during the day at least they tend to be repeating things on around a 2-hour loop, meaning if Freeview had that extra channel they could pretty much show all that content during the day on 302, with the highlights programme on 301.

Yep - it's a real shame.

Though it isn't Sky who have 4-5 stream - it's BBC DSat. Freesat viewers also get the multi-screen service - and FTA viewers can watch the streams and pick their audios - though don't usually get the MHEG5 text stuff aimed at Freesat (though 7MC and Vista TV Pack can be hacked to sort of do some of it)
