Day 1 and already the scheduling of Today at Wimbledon has been shown to be a stupid decision!

The scheduling of this programme never ceases to amaze me. It doesn't seem to cross anybody's mind that its normally still playable conditions up until at least 9pm at this time of year, therefore it would be a far more sensible idea to air Today At Wimbledon at a time when its going to be beyond playable conditions - say from 9:30pm, instead of putting it in at the unworkable time of 8pm.

From the comments bit of the Sport's Editor's Blog:

Quote:
Just on the 8pm highlights point... Last year was an experiment, but we did some detailed research afterwards - and a small but clear majority of viewers preferred the 8pm start time.

There are two reasons for it. The first is that the tennis audience flows naturally from the live coverage into a recap of the day.

The second is that placing highlights at 8pm allows BBC Two to run its normal schedule after 9pm. So if you take a popular series like "Rome" - which has to play after the 9pm watershed - it would have to be taken off air completely during Wimbledon if the highlights were at 9.30pm.

And don't forget: if you prefer live play, it continues past 8pm most nights on our red button and interactive services.

Final thought: we do, of course, accept that scheduling can't please everyone. But at least with highlights you think are too early there's a chance to video them or put them on the PVR to watch at a time that does suit - which I absolutely accept isn't the case when people think highlights are on too late, as with the Ashes.

Although BBC2 should plan their schedules so that series end before Wimbledon and new ones start afterwards, like they always did up to last year

I understand BBC2 wanting some of their regular schedule, but 8pm still isn't the wisest of times. Maybe 10.35pm on BBC1 would be the best slot (perhaps with an earlier showing on BBCi, as I believe they do (or did) if it doesn't air at 8pm).

Anyone else having trouble accessing the bbc.co.uk/wimbledon site? I keep getting a '403 Forbidden' message.

EDIT: Just discovered it's also available at this address which appears to be working.

Yeah - the /wimbledon did redirect to /tennis (which also has stopped working) yesterday morning - but since they began it seems to have been broke.

A possible solution would be to run live tennis until 8.30pm, then Today at Wimbledon from 8.30-9.30pm. Then BBC2 could show an hour long post-watershed programme at 9.30pm.

Lol! Plus he's likely to be last on Centre Court tomorrow evening - did somebody say BBC1??

Bugger.

Even Sue Barker now seems to have realised he's got no chance, quickly putting Andrew Castle in his place when he began talking about week two!

Hopefully he'll be knocked out tomorrow then - and hopefully as Greg's got in first, he'll never become part of the BBC commentary team!

Reducing it to 3 or 4 times a week would probabaly make people complain just as much. Also what is the point in them taking it off air for 2 random weeks when they have nowt to replace it with.

You may have a point actually. But what makes Neighbours' absence so noticeable is that the BBC choose a saturation sporting event (which lots of people hate) to take it off. Neighbours isn't missed as much over Christmas because there's plenty of good stuff in its place.

Oh, and check out P143 on ITV Teletext. There's someone on there voicing the same views as me about tennis... Wink

Good programmes over Christmas? Thats a matter of opinion Wink Ironically they didnt take it off air very much over Christmas last year - I think we only lost episodes on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. It used to be off air for 2 weeks over Christmas but for some reason we are about 12 weeks behind Oz so no need to take such a large break in the uk. They obviously prefer taking it off during Wimbledom rather than over Christmas.

Be interesting to see if Home and Away is taken off over Christmas this year - in the past it has been shown on Christmas Day when it falls on a weekday.

Oh ive seen the letters on Teletext - I was tempted to text in saying what told you about them having to take a break sometime.

Couple of questions - firstly, is Claire Balding doing all the stuff for Five Live, or is John Inverdale still involved?

Secondly, it the multi-screen on Sky the same format it's been most years or now in the more mosaic form used for other BBC Sport services.

Talking of interactive, it's time BBC Sport sorted theirs out. It is ridiculous that when live coverage ends and the Today at Wimbledon loop begins, they remove the Wimbledon Interactive overlay (which includes things like news, results, the draw etc.) and use the standard BBC Sport one instead (which has a general schedule and help).
