Don't forget Radio 7 was "BBC7" for the first couple of years, leading to quite a few people thinkign it was a TV channel, till they added the "radio" to the name.

That was for all the digital radio stations. 1Xtra from the BBC, BBC 6 Music and BBC7.

I think that was because when they were launched in 2002, DAB radios were few and far between, so it was reckoned most listeners would be hearing those stations online or through digital TV, rather than on traditional radio sets. Nowadays all three of those officially have the word 'Radio' in their name.

The radio station for Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire is "BBC Tees"

There's also off the tip of my tongue. BBC Somerset, BBC Surrey, BBC Sussex, BBC Three Counties Radio and BBC Essex has used the brand since launch as the local commercial radio station at the time was called Essex Radio.

There's also BBC Wiltshire and BBC Newcastle, while Oxford, Lincolnshire and Guernsey have all dropped the 'Radio' in the past but have since reinstated it.

I thought we were going to tick off Murray for a page or two of moans about the local news being on at 7.30.

That'll be next week probably, most likely Monday, Wednesday or Friday when they have an easily ditchable half hour (Mini Monet Millionaire, half of The One Show, Would I Lie To You)

Found this YouTube clip recently. Live BBC coverage from this day (5th July) 32 years ago of a spectacular summer storm at Wimbledon.

Isn't there currently still huge variations across BBC (English) Local Radio stations as to whether the word "Radio" is an official part of the name or not? And haven't some have chopped-and-changed their minds in this regard, over the years?

It's understandable to omit it from stations with longer geographical descriptions (e.g. BBC Coventry & Warwickshire) to avoid the name being ridiculously long, but for most/all other stations I think including the word Radio sounds better.

I know BBC Essex doesn't have the word radio in their name because it's rival when it launched was called Essex Radio.

The more recent station names dint include the word radio I think because they're not just radio stations these days, they can use the brand online too (nd if things were different on local TV services too)

BBC Two go straight from the match into Today at Wimbledon without any junction or titles. Commentators handed over to Clare Balding and Pat Cash out of vision.
