Why don't the BBC close BBC Four, put that programming back onto BBC Two (because 4 is only doing what 2 used to do) and create in Four's place BBC Sport.
People always bring up the BBC Sport Channel idea, problem is if it's important enough to be moved from BBC Two to BBC One, then it would certainly be important enough to move from a theoretical BBC Sport Channel to BBC One.
It may have worked 20 or 30 years ago and the BBC still have a fair bit of sport but certainly wouldn't have nearly enough to have a BBC Sport channel and Wimbledon, Olympics, FA Cup, World Cup, UEFA European Championship would be moved like VMphil states to BBC One
They'd just pad it out like they do with BBC Parliament outside of sittings with "classic sport" from the past.

Its just not necessary though, especially now. Much better to have the red button service which offers as many channels as required when required.
Sport is also mainstream entertainment and has as much a place on the main channels as any regularly scheduled programmes.

Nice intro sequence shown after the main titles sequence on BBC2 at 11am. Some BBC1 and BBC2 pres, VT spooling, old and new cameras used at Wimbledon etc.
So Wimbledon will be on BBC1, BBC2 and the BBC News Channel at around 6.35. Over kill?
It wasn't. Wimbledon left BBC One at 18:25. Not that it matters anyway since Sportday would normally have been on the news channel at that time any other week. You can't expect them to ignore Wimbledon.

That's a great idea, lets remind everyone how dominant BBC Sport used to be, a BBC Sport channel never happened then so it won't now.
On another note Andy Murray match last night peaked at 6.23 million on BBC One something the BBC will be delighted with and about 3 or 4 million more than they would have got on BBC Two and it justifies the BBC change of channels at 7pm.

3 to 4 million 'sorts of people' who wouldn't be able to cope with a sudden change of platform for their train to work then ?
Wimbledon on prime time BBC1 (when a British player is on) ensures massive coverage for the sport. Cricket took the paywall route and alas, isn't as popular, so the new deal with Sky and the BBC ensures some live FTA coverage for the first time in years.
It's not like every Grand Slam is shown live on the BBC, Wimbledon is one of the most important live events of the year and although I'm not the biggest sports fan respect the fact the two week event is available to the widest audience possible.
That's a very good argument for FTA coverage, but if the FTA schedule has coverage on BBC2 at a given time then there is no reason whatever for said schedule to be torn up and the BBC1 schedule messed up as a result.
How many people in this country can get BBC1 but can't get BBC2?....

"What's on Plaform 1? Ooh, the 1038 to Liverpool Lime Street, my favourite."
