Or they could finally realise that Wimbledon is a middle class event, that is neither educational, informative, or entertaining for much of the country and is not where the BBC Sport budget should be focussed.

I don't find football remotely educational, informative or entertaining, but the schedules are full of it and constantly tossed around to accomodate it.

Your post is basically an "I don't like it, so they shouldn't show it" argument.

But when more and more sports, including those that receive no other TV coverage are being cut due to the cutbacks, the extent to which Wimbledon is covered is unjustifiable. It would be one thing for the BBC to share the coverage with a commercial broadcaster and show 1 court live and highlights of other matches, but they continue to insist on showing every single game on every single court, even though the numbers watching some of the outer courts could be counted on one hand.

They don't show "every game on every court", not sure how that's even possible even with all the red button channels. Maybe online they do, but there it's not as if it's taking space away from other programmes or sports you may consider more "worthy" of coverage.

And why's it "unjustifiable" if it's popular and gets people watching? Again, it really does sound like your objections are based more around the fact you don't personally like it.

I don't like football, but I'm not sitting here calling for the BBC (or anyone else) to take it off air. Though surely it's football if anything the BBC should be getting rid of due to cutbacks using your logic? After all ITV show plenty and it takes up most of the schedules on Sky Sports, surely the BBC could save some money by not showing it and invest in other sports?

Connected Red Button is IP-streamed - so not limited by the number of outlets in the way DVB streams are...

Wimbledon on prime time BBC1 (when a British player is on) ensures massive coverage for the sport. Cricket took the paywall route and alas, isn't as popular, so the new deal with Sky and the BBC ensures some live FTA coverage for the first time in years.

It's not like every Grand Slam is shown live on the BBC, Wimbledon is one of the most important live events of the year and although I'm not the biggest sports fan respect the fact the two week event is available to the widest audience possible.

I saw on the news saying they felt they had to go back to FTA because being limited to Sky might have made them more money, but it's badly hurt cricket's profile.

Cricket just doesn't have the mass appeal nowadays that it did during the Botham, Gatting, Warne, Atherton, Butcher eras. Freddie Flintoff has been and gone.... it's just a pale shadow of its former self. Used to love watching test matches, now I couldn't give a toss.

The contract with Sky has damaged English international test cricket almost irrevocably.

BBC One continuity seems to think Venus Williams is playing today - she isn't.

She is - her match from yesterday wasn't completed.

Don't really get why BBC2 have switched to Bargain Hunt but they have at least scrapped the scheduled film.
