BBC's Wimbledon coverage seems the same as ever, and they are still using the 2010-11 graphics set (just like in 2010, it seems that the new BBC graphics are just for the World Cup so far and will roll out to all sports from later this year - unlike 2006, where Wimbledon also took on the new graphics that year).
Not entirely slick, as there was no BBC Sport swoosh or programme name at the end of the titles, plus this graphics glitch was visible as Sue was running through the courts:
Watching Wimbledon, the sound from commentators Mark Petchey and John McEnroe is much quieter than Tim Henman (co-commentating) and Sue Barker, and sometimes drowned out by the sounds from the court.
It seems moving matches around the coverage isn't just confined to BBC One and BBC Two - the Dan Evans match has been moved from red button stream 5 to stream 1 in the last half hour, and then just minutes ago they announced it was moving to BBC Two, and broke away from it, but BBC Two were still interviewing Novak Djokovic, and then we've had to wait for Sue Barker to get through trails for Today at Wimbledon, the Andy Murray documentary on later, results from earlier today, and a tour around the current games before joining the match. I wish they would wait until a channel is ready before they move coverage, so that we get continuous coverage of it.
Is the shading on the title bar ("Other Courts") new?
Also, what a mess that graphic is as a whole. Mixed and mis-aligned text, cramped text boxes, mixed sixes... at least they've moved out of the 4:3 safety zone.
Wimbeldon has done it's own thing for graphics for numerous years - while they're based on the normal BBC Sport look, there's lots of differences in animation, layout and usage.
BBC Wimbledon Connected Red Button is excellent, however some issues with the iOS App for Apple devices, when feeds on the Virtual Channels are changed, occasionally mid match, I know not why, the text detailing what's on the stream deviates from the contents frequently, especially as play comes to a close. Will be something for them to work on urgently before the Commonwealth Games begins.
Only criticism of the Connected service is I'd have thought they'd have introduced a more prominent stats section like they have for the World Cup - plus a bit odd Wimbledon doesn't have a dedicated section (other than the standard Tennis menu) yet there already is one in place for Glasgow 2014.
I'd also say thanks to them finally seeing sense and ditching the Flog It repeats on BBC2 that even with the World Cup clashes Freeview has probably got more coverage than ever before. Just wish though they'd start the network coverage on BBC2 at 11am considering they talk for half an hour despite play beginning at 11.30am, so their live coverage didn't begin until after noon. Similarly as I say every year they should move the Lunchtime News forward an hour so BBC1 is on air in time for the show court matches at 1pm.
One of the best matches of the tournament so far - Djokovic v Stepanek - a five-set thriller, which came to a conclusion at 7.50pm on Tuesday evening. And only warranted a quick chat on Today at Wimbledon, with no highlights of the match whatsoever. Fine if you happen to have been watching the live coverage. Totally useless if you tune in at 8.00pm expecting a highlights programme. Or, like me, sat down to watch it after work four hours later.
