Brilliant new feature, with Eurosport's Annabel Croft and Mats Wilander on the Wimbledon official site, news and occasional dipping into live coverage. .... and it's in HD too.

I think more people will know her from Interceptor than Eurosport. Laughing

Joking aside, the programme looks great it's like all the bits from the BBC's coverage without much of the live sport. The set is nice and similar to ITV's french open effort.

Wouldn't this service infringe some of the BBC's rights, or have they come to some kind of agreement.

I imagine that they are using as much content as would be used in fair access reporting by other none rights holding news broadcasters. It's clear that they have access to the native feed and are using the same graphics style as the BBC do for their own 'channel' purposes.

Probably something to do with rights but it seems an awful waste to have the extra Olympic HD stream (304) just showing a caption for the Olympic coverage on Freeview HD. Surely they could put it to good use while Wimbledon is on?

Agreed ... But it's only there for the olympic coverage, the BBC Trust only agreed it's use only for that purpose, Pity 'extended testing' hasn't been used as an excuse though.

Horrible placement of a huge scorebox on Wimbledon coverage.

I agree 304 is a total waste. I would love to be watching Berdych crash out in the first round but can't.

Croft directed folks that they could view the whole match on the BBC and ESPN at one point.

It's also interesting seeing all the other TV crews in background, I could see new style BBC Sport desk in the background so I'm guessing that's for 'Today at Wimbledon'.

Will she direct viewers to Challenge[TV] at 11pm?

Probably not. Perhaps if she's on Twitter someone could remind her.

Perhaps they could pretend they were a contestant and they're looking forward to seeing the show tonight?

On the other hand - it DOES mean that the picture quality on BBC One HD and BBC HD (as well as ITV1 HD and C4 HD) is likely to be higher as a result. When 304HD carries moving picture content it's going to be stealing bitrate from the existing 4 HD channels.

(Given that the BBC decided to close down BBC HD during the recent Jubilee celebrations - broadcasting a static frame rather than the full-content HD Preview - presumably to improve the picture quality on BBC One HD - it must be registering as an issue? )

Edit: someone needs to buy annabel an iPad so she can get rid of the mountain of paper on the desk.

You'd better tell IBM to get their bums in gear and create an iPad version of their Wimbledon iPhone app then... Think Wimbledon must be the only Grand Slam that doesn't have an iPad app yet... French Open certainly did.
