Has anyone else had problems with sky widescreen (bbc1, 2, ITV, News24 etc) being stretched over and above 16:9? on News24, i loose half of the "press (red)" and if i then go to the epg i loose the first 3 chars of the programme numbers. sky are blaming my tv.

i seem to think i have had a software upgrade which has f****d things up.

thoughts?

If you're losing part of the Press Red icon then your TV is set up incorrectly. Sounds like you have the Sky box in 16:9 but you have the TV in what my TV calls "CINE" mode - cutting off the top and bottom of pictures. You need to set your Sky box either to 4:3 LB or sort out your TV setup.

Sounds like you're watching channels that are already in 16:9 in 16:9 zoom mode, like a fair proportion of the rest of the (thick) population.

The TV shouldn't allow zooming of a 16:9 source...

On the digibox, go to Services, System Setup, Picture Settings.

Make sure Picture Format is 16:9, Scart Control ON, Video Output RGB.

Your digibox should be connected to the AV1 or SCART 1 input of your TV. Most will only do RGB and widescreen switching on the first AV input.

If you still find part of the picture is cut off, there is too much cut-off on the TV. If it's new, or within warranty, return it as faulty. If it's not within warranty, you may be able to find instructions online on how to adjust the overscan via the (hidden) service menu. Not all TV's allow you to do this, and be careful because it's easy to bugger up your tv completely if you don't know what you're doing...

m. thanks for all your comments. i have the tv in auto mode, but i get the same if i switch to manual 16:9 mode.

i always used to have problems with ITV1 only when a widescreen programme (touch of frost for example) went to ad breaks - the proportions used to go to pot - i would have to up and down on the volume to adjust.

looks like it is the tv then.

thanks

My Philips does, Mark, and other Philips' sets I've helped install do too.

It probably is a problem with your TV, but what make is it? It may be possible to correct the geometry settings on your TV for 16:9 mode. Just search on google for Service mode (TV make and model)

Doesn't happen on my Sony though.

grrrrr@Philips tvs then. Another bloody annoying thing that Philips make their sets do is an on-screen display of what the aspect ratio is. So despite the fact that channels do their best to hide the switches, Philips sets flag it up...

Thankfully not on my four year old CRT model Philips, but that DOES happen on the newer ones, I notice.

I installed a plasma model a few weeks ago for a friend and noticed that it had that very annoying habit.
