Watching BBC 1 and 2 this morning all trailers were boradcast in 14:9 on analogue. Most idents were as well apart from at the start of Football Focus and Grandstand (which are in 16:9 but put as 4:3 on analgoue). I know the BBC were doing some tests on a few idents lately but is today the start of using 14:9 all the time? It looks better to have them in 14:9 because of the news clock in the regions. Flicking between 14:9 and 4:3 just looked messy.

Oh and a note for those that hate 14:9. This is done for a reason. The programme can be shown in 4:3 on analogue (like Granstand etc.) but is usually broadcast in 14:9 so graphics or important action is not missed off. If you have a digital box and have it in 4:3 mode when viewing a programme in 14:9 on analogue you'll see the problem.

Personally I used to hate the use of widescreen but now I'm getting used to it.

Yes, it appears BBC ONE has gone fully widescreen. Only 4:3 idents are shown before a 4:3 programme. (Like digital)

BBC TWO had been playing with 14:9 on analogue for a while but now it seems it has spread.

Its all good if you ask me, makes widescreen switiching a thing of the past. (Apart from before a 4:3, when the last 14:9 trailer it faded to black to allow the switch to happen and then the ident will be in 4:3 also) This is a common practice on Carlton, all idents are 14:9, so the switching takes place between the ident and the start of the programme.

I think that's exactly what the BBC are planning James. Only show anything 4:3 after the last trailer therefore, ident and programme and then back to 14:9. Looks much better.

There was one night just before N24 where someone at BBC One went switching mad! It went through various 4:3, 14:9 stages before resting on 4:3 ident into 14:9 N24 titles - twas all over the place! I'd guess today seems to be 14:9 day by the sound of it.

Cheers, Asa

Am I right in thinking that the BBC1 analogue continuity suite has now closed, and everything is now coming from the digital area? This would no doubt explain why analogue continuity is now in 14:9.

So if BBC1 and BBC2 continuity on analogue and digital have now finally merged...there must be an awful lot of spare announcers knocking around. What are they going to do with them all???

I'm sure they could leave the BBC, there are plenty of 'quality' ads to voice. Very Happy

I get all my BBC1 and 2 (and ITV1, channel 4, 5 etc..) continuity in 4:3 still. Mainly cos of what my digital box is set to. Those black bars are messy and i cant stand basketball palyers (tall, thin people).

The latest I Macs come with widescreen monitors now I'm afraid. Stick with the PC and you should be fine. Plus no one can suddenly turn off 4:3 resolutions on every person's computer in the country like the governement can with TV.

One thing I think is that 4:3 is being turned off to quickly (and cropping is being turned on- even only 1 programme being cropped is too fast). The bit of good news is top of the pops new look is 4:3 so thats a relief.

Watching analogue with a 4:3 TV, especially at prime time is a misery, since every single programme has 14:9 bars on it!

Except Fridays when TOTP is on. It actually shocked me that the new look will be 4:3 but im happy.
