i take it you mean programmes like the bbc news which even though is now 100% widescreen (even though some local opt outs are suedo widescreen) ie 4x3 picture squeezed to full height anamorphic! - do actually transmitt some 4 x 3 material in widescreen hence the people are incorrectly broadcast as short fat people - seems to happen a few times a week on the beeb!
one of the most noticeable was the This Morining coverage of the NTA where they transmitted minutes from award ceremony in 4 x3 but forgot to 'squash' it their end before tranmitting it - so david jason ended up even shorter then he really is
A few 4:3 programmes (CBBC, Emmerdale/Tonight on the Granada North ITV channels on digital etc) have already been broadcast in 14:9 'widescreen'. Personally, and I don't think I'm alone, I think this practice is awful. The top and bottom of the picture are shaved off, and the rest of it zoomed in to fit the 625 lines leading to the resolution being lost and the whole thing looking rubbish, whether you have a 4:3 or 16:9 TV. BBC News does this as well on local news programmes and reports from the US etc.
It's about time it stopped!!! If a programme is made in widescreen it should be broadcast in widescreen, and if it was made in 4:3 it should be broadcast in 4:3. Any compromises degrade the picture and cause far more problems than they solve. Evil evil evil

I agree!
Emmerdale, Trisha and maybe some local programmes on Carlton/LWT & Anglia are cropped to 14:9 on digital, and it does look horrible.
I'm not as bothered with BBC News, but CBBC shoudnt crop things like they do on BBC Choice where most programmes were originally 4:3.
Youve been framed is 16:9 now which IMO is bad. Virtually no camcorder footage is 16:9 and camcorders generally produce low resolution- even digital ones which makes it worse.

Yes- but it doesn't affect everyone as the majority (as i understand it) still don't have widescreen TVs. But the set is much better, and at least you have clips in the background (on her Ball of Balls ups!) to watch instead of listening to the annoying Lisa Riley.

ps - i'm not too sure about the title theme music though!

Can I ask when BBC News has reports on 4:3 leterbox or 18:9 (is it that?) widescreen, they always have a black bar on the right hand side and the aston goes over it?
Why can't news reports just come in widescreen?

BBC News itself is filmed in 16:9 but 4:3 footage is cropped to 14:9, which gives you small black bars on the left and right when watching in Letterbox mode or on a widescreen tv.
Its because of the amount of cameras used to do news footage. It would cost a lot to convert/buy new widescreen ones. Even then there would be footage aqquired from other broadcasters which would still be cropped.

BBC London News are leading the way - almost all of the reports are filmed in widescreen.
