Oh, come on.
With modern editing tecniques they hardly need the studio and the audience to be in the background of the shot for the edit, do they?
They'll add them in after they've got the close-up part, won't they.

How would they edit in a new shot of a thumb covering the date, incorporating the studio background though? It'd be a bit of a waste hiring out the studio just for that little purpose

The answer has already been given, there is no fancy editing, they don't put the dates on the cheques anymore, and Chris puts his thumb there.

Don't know what they do normally, now, but tonight was edited, trust me.

Would Celador have had to edit it themselves then? Or would someone at ITV just give it a quick job?

Suppose it won't be long before ITV News announces..
"After nearly 10 years, the successful ITV gameshow Who Wants to be a Millionaire is coming to an end. The show's presenter Chris Tarrant said "the format was tired" and that "time has moved on". Nina Nannar looks back now at how it became a television institution..."
Hmmm...

Looks like another "scandal" to get Millionaire back in the headlines:

Although whether it is a scandal is questionable - if someone is eligible to get on the show and win the cash, they can't say the producers have been "cheated" if they've had a bit of help (from an outsider) along the way.
The phone a friend thing is what sounds dodgiest - but my understanding was the friends were all either backstage or accompanied by someone from Celador anyway.
