I could not have timed it better. Our ten year old Phillips television packs-up in time for today's Rugby. The perfect excuse for a new TV, and naturally, we should go HD.

I have been doing some research for sometime as I'm not the sort of person to dive into John Lewis, buy the first HD Ready TV I see only to later find out it's crap. This has presented a problem though. Some places I go say Plasma is the only way forward, others suggest LCD. I have looked into CRT HD Ready televisions but have decided to stick with an easily wallmountable (if that's a word) devise.

I've made a poll, but please obviously only vote if you have an informed opinion, rather than what your mate told you down the Kings Head last Friday.

My problem is, I have not a clue what to go for.. I just know I want a flat screen HD Ready telly. Does anyone here have particular leanings, and also why? And importantly any suggestions for particular devises would also be gratefully received.

I've got an LCD telly in my room and have had no problems whatsoever. Great picture quality, although the one we have in our kitchen can look a bit dodgy at times. A bit like watching something online, a bit blocky at times. I'm sure if you spend enough, though, it'll be fine.

From what I've read elsewhere, LCDs tend to be recommended over plasmas.

LCDs do tend to be recommended over plasma. But it depends what you want and how much you're willing to spend. Try and find a proper decent shop like Euronics (Euronics in Jersey that is, the others may be crap) who have a lot of TVs on display which are connected to proper decent splitters or even separate DVD players so you can see what the true picture quality is. Our local Woolworths has 56 inch plasma TVs connected up on a really lousy RF splitter which should have been discontinued yonks ago, and is no good for 14 inch CRT TVs let alone 56 inch LCDs!

Neither. Buy a CRT.

I agree, but he said he didn't want one.

Although, which make of HD Ready CRT is actually any good, if any? I got the impression there wasn't more than a couple of manfacturers at the most.

Sony CRT's are good.

Well here's the deal.

You could spend £800 on a 32" LCD and another £300 (& £10 per month) on an HD Sky box on which you'll get a few HD channels which will look great. The SD channels will look worse than they would on an old CRT.

You could spend £300 on a good 32" CRT and keep your SD Sky box. The picture on the SD channels on a CRT will look almost as good as the HD channels on an LCD. You could then go on holiday with the money you've saved.

It might be old technology, but CRT still provides better pictures (than SD on LCD) at substantially less cost.

LCD has been brilliant for me.

The reason I'm trying to get away from CRTs is the space issue, or are they now more snug and less bulky?

I coudn't agree more.

RTS: Some manufacturers like Samsung have really massively reduced the footprint on their CRT TVs. Infact so to www.samsung.co.uk and look up their CRT range. They make a great CRT HDTV.

Seems to be Plasma over a certain size is a need-be. A few stores in town have been yacking on about this Panasonic model.
