Regardless of what SKYnews plans to do with the newswall, I am surprised no-one has any suggestions on how or what SKYnews or any other news broadcaster will bring out to replace the newswall. I have some ideas, but they seem a little off the wall at the moment, and am hoping I can explain them visually soon.

I don't think sky will change the format or get rid of the newswall because its a gimmick - like most things with tv news nowadays.

Sky will probably go on a quest now to find the next gimmick - although we've had the most logical adaptation from the newswall, and that was the floormap.

what's next? who knows? who cares?

What I think could replace the newswall idea in time is the idea of a virtual reality environment where the presenter is actually 'in' the graphics.

I don't know whether current technology is able to do this though; we might have virtual reality sets but these are basically just creatively done bits of CSO, the presenters can't move around and interact with them. And also, VR sets are one design which can be planned well in advance. Wheras VR presentation graphics would need to be a mature enough technology that multiple packages could be easily knocked up every day - and knocked up affordably.

I don't think current technology is mature enough to make this viable, but I do ultimately believe that's where things will go. The entire set (except the desk obviously) will be virtual, and the presenter will be able to get up from the desk and walk off into a virtual environment to do the report, and then walk back to the desk. I don't know if this would work, it might look naff, it might be impossible for the presenter to convincingly pull this off when he/she can't see the environment they're in, but I do think it's an idea, and considering how much virtual sets and CSO technology has advanced over the last 10 years (it wasn't that long ago that news sets were totally real, with pictures behind presenters appearing by having a physical CRT monitor above their head displaying them), I don't think it's entirely inconceivable that one day they may be able to create VR environments.

Basically, it is an environment, VR of course, where any information can be brought up on call. Charts, Graphics, Statistics etc...

This environment appears around the presenter who sits at a revolving desk, or a 360 degree desk. As they turn and the graphics etc appear around them, they can call up screens of live reporters on location, as well as other VT.

Its a bit hard to explain, and I am trying to come up with a 3D example to show, but other than that, I dont see what else can be done. I am thinking on the lines of rolling the floormap idea, the newswall, and other misc graphics into one environment which can be used to report any kind of story.

But then this is going towards a FAKE newsroom which everyone on here doesnt want or like (well according to the comments made on the ITV news thread anyway)

But its all double standards on this forum anyway!

LOOK at the logo. Go on- stare at it. It clearly says SKY news.

Maybe so, but the channel is called Sky News. That is how they refer to themselves in plain text.

Likewise, the BBC refers to BBC News 24, not BBC NEWS 24.

ITV News call themselves ITV News, not itv News.

Just as your username is Electrik Media, and the logo in your sig says electrik media.

When designing mocks, it may well be appropriate to use SKYnews, but when talking about the real channel, it is called Sky News.

Maybe so. But you are missing the point.

If a designer designs a lot for a company, he get used to typing the channel name in (is it appears onscreen) to be rendered.

In this case- it would be SKYnews. This is a television presentation forum, therefore itmes are described in the format of television presentation- ie SKYnews. SKY is in uppercase- news in lower.

And my company is called Elektrik Media. There are no c's in the word Elektrik. If you can't type my company name in as it appears on your screen- you make me laugh critisising Martin!

I rest my case- now where's that bottle of Chardonnay & Will & Grace DVD?

I think you will find that in Textual Context like this forum said news channel should be referred to as 'Sky News'. Having been taught recently how to write up reports on my own graphic design I am aware of what you should be doing ... this is taught by a proper English Lecturer.

In example. A recent piece of my Corporate ID is called "ITALIAN CORNER' on the actual logo but it must be refered to as 'Italian Corner' in any other form.

Another example. BBC News is BBC News as 'BBC' is a (can't think of word)... but SKY don't stand for anything.

Oh and the Electric one up there. The fact he missed or inserted an extra letter has really nothing to do with the point. Your company name is a specially formed word of which should be spelt as is seen there. SKYnews as your referring it to should be Sky News. Whether you are a Graphic Designer or a bin man.

Well you might choose to use all caps in a plain-text situation - that's your branding decision. Sky News call themselves Sky News. Only Martin calls them SKYnews.

talkSPORT, on the other hand, call themselves talkSPORT in plain text (though I notice their website isn't entirely consistent on this matter.

This is one of those boring English things. talkSPORT really should be written as Talk Sport in a document. ITALIAN CORNER should be Italian Corner. I'm no English teacher but it's how it should be. No matter what the Branding mob say... english is english.

But ONLY the logo uses that format. Not any other element of presentation.
If the astons or straps mention the channel name, it says SKY NEWS. If they used mixed-case astons it would say Sky News.

Coming from the corporate success that was Hedgehog Online and Xenon Radio... who's websites have come and gone, and who runs a 'production company' that doesnt actually produce anything.....

I rest my case.
