Then this thread is not for you I dare say. And I am not changing my habits to make you lot happy. I have been writing it like that since 2001, and will not change now!

But it's just plain wrong!

I would have thought that a designer like you would realise that presentation shouldn't distract from the content - people are distracted from what you have to say because they find the use of SKYnews jarring.

Just because I do not appreciate the way you write Sky News and the fact I do not like the channel, shouldn't mean I cannot post my thoughts in this thread. I believe that Sky has been copied by it's rivals (ITV & BBC) but Sky really cared about their news output and content then they would have revived their graphics set ages ago. It now seems that the blue in both Sky News studios is too bright and I have found this off-putting. The relaxed feel of the channel has actually had bad implications on the presenters of the channel who remain quite slow and not upbeat when breaking news is received. The Lambert Report actually kicked News 24 up the backside but it seems Sky, being completely independent will not receive this well needed push.

On the relaunch of Sky News in 2001, it seemed the World had found the best in 24 hour news, but slowly ITV have gained popularity and audience figures for News 24 in the Iraq war were often higher than years before. It seems Sky have took advantage of their lead in 24 hour news channels but as the competition increases, all Sky News has done is installed a Polecam and updated to very annoying new title music.

If I am wrong please tell me, but I use to like Sky News and now I do not.

Nothing personal to you Martin but Sky News is just a bit dire! Laughing

Now all that SKY pioneered back then, has been perverted and emulated by both ITV and the BBC.

SKYnews' strengths are still there, and still set it apart, but their 'babies' they introduced to the world, have been taken and used by the rivals.

I am finding it hard to see what SKY could do to once again pioneer new methods of presenting the news to us, and with their new look, will they have to make some changes to stay ahead on the graphics front?

Well - you are mentioning that theres nothing 'new to pioneer news presentation' but then a lot of people are complaining that ITV News *didnt* do anything new but infact copy SKYnews and BBC (as inferred in your post) Whereas the reality of it was that they are the only station with a huge virtual reality set and video wall - which other news channel has one of them or virtual reality anyway? ITV News have used their virtual reality studio for many years now with it being used most night on the 18:30 bulletin.

So it looks like that you accept the fact that SKY are now going to copy the BBC or ITV and are lessening the blow by creating such a thread and dropping snippets in to build your case for when they do eventually relaunch!

It doesnt bother me in the slightest whether news studios borrow ideas as there are only so many ways of doing things with current technology and there are BOUND to be similar ideas around the stations!

ITV News have done something a bit different but are still getting flak for it! I just dont know how to please some people some of the time!

ITV News (and BBC News) are so not like SKYnews as all sky provide is one rolling news station and no other national bulletins on other channels or many hours a day of regional news - so you would *expect* them to cover the news better - BUT - from memory on this forum Im sure ITV News got some praise last year for its coverage on numerous stories and did break news BEFORE SKYnews or at the same time with the BBC lagging on many occassions. I dont want to get into a this channel broke news first before that one debate but I dont feel ITV News ever gets a fair shout on this forum and is always belittled!

No-one predicted the newswall that SKYnews introduced in 2001. I am not saying there is no new ideas or methods out there, only I cant personally predict what they could do next.

This is the whole point to the thread, together surely we can come up with some ideas for new ways to present the news and other ideas.

Together (well apart from you) everyone can surely wait a little while to see what the wonderul Sky News has in store for us (I mean you Martin). By the way, the newswall idea is preety rubish now when you think of the technology in the new ITV News studio. If Sky wanted to stay on top above it's rivals it could but it seems more concerned about opening an India bureaux and quite frankly no one cares about "Sky News first for India".

Well its not aimed directly at what SKYnews has planned, more over a discussion in general on what could the News Channels do next to revolutionise or evolve the presentation of News.

He's right, you know.

The perfectly designed (and a forum post is a design) should be taken for granted. The user (reader) should be able to use (read) the product (forum post) without complaint or distraction, without thinking about how it appears.

I'm gonna cause a storm here now probably (with my mish-mash of thoughts!!)...

In my opinion, the new ITV news set is not state of the art at all - its just a set with a CSO wrap around it. Hardly state of the art when you think that CSO has been used by other companies for a number of years i.e. the BBC pre corporatisation.

The ITV news set just looks fake - yes - it is ground breaking in that it is using virtual reality, however it doesn't beat the atmosphere and the look of a real set - i.e. Sky News or even BBC news.

The ITV news set looks cold and harsh (and it'll show the dirt in no time with the white floors! Laughing ) Sky news has the warmth of its set and presenters.

I'm sure Sky News will upgrade their newswall, make greater use of it, and the floor maps when they relaunch - but Sky have a good knack of keeping things tight lipped.

There you go - my 2p's worth.

Everybody. Can you listen to what Martin is saying? Does the logo read 'Sky News' or SKY news? I would say the latter.

Now, when a designer is creating mocks- he is used to entering the correct letters for the animation.

LOOK at the logo. Go on- stare at it. It clearly says SKY news.

'Nuff said.

Maybe so, but the channel is called Sky News. That is how they refer to themselves in plain text.

Likewise, the BBC refers to BBC News 24, not BBC NEWS 24.

ITV News call themselves ITV News, not itv News.

Just as your username is Electrik Media, and the logo in your sig says electrik media.

When designing mocks, it may well be appropriate to use SKYnews, but when talking about the real channel, it is called Sky News.
