I've noticed that in the few weeks, on Saturdays they are playing out the overnight ident on BBC News 24 during the afternoon. Does anyone know why? This is really confusing me, as when I first seen it, I thought it must have been a mistake, but it's now been happening every week! I am now very confused:?

When you say overnight ident do you mean a variation on the News 24 one or the BBC News generic used on BBC World and BBC News 24 at night? Only asking because I thought there was only two News 24 idents - the same but one shorter than the other.
I mean the one that's used on BBC World and News 24 at night. It's also a variation of the one used throughout the day on BBC World. Do you know what I mean?

Yep. Thats the one I thought it might be. A possible reason might be due to the War on Terror coverage. Perhaps they are doing it incase they decide to flick one of the terrestrial stations to News 24 for a News report or Special if something big happens. Having BBC News titles would be less confusing for viewers.
The likeliest reason for 'BBC NEWS' opening titles (as used overnight or similar) running on News 24 is that the programme is being broadcast on News 24 and World at the same time. It may be made in either the World or News 24 studio/galllery and broadcast by the other.
The overnight titles - or similar - are used as they have no News 24 or World branding on them - as they are designed for the joint overnight service!
Occasionally these titles have played when there has not been a simulcast - but this has been in error I believe.

But they play the generic 'BBC News' titles, then Philip Hayton says 'This is BBC News 24'! So they can't be simulcasting with BBC World... And this has been happening for the past few Saturday afternoons - so it can't be in error...
Would viewers actually care though? I doubt anyone would be annoyed about seeing a News 24 ident on World or a World ident on News 24. I know this certainly wasn't the situation when CNN International took the CNN Domestic Networks - ie CNN US, CNNfn etc. Although I do remember someone in Atlanta telling me 'CNN US has the money, CNN International has the news' - after I commented on how much better presented CNN US was when compared to CNN International.
I think it's pretty fair to assume that whenever a World ident is played out on News 24, and the channel is still reffered to by the presenters as News 24, then it's a mistake. But with the situation in Afghanistan like it is at the moment it wouldn't surprise me if World and News 24 start to join up on a regular basis, if only for cost saving measures.
