Probably my sister's been using hair straighteners and left it on a video that ruined it! I don't even know what was on there!
Anyway, our beta videos we've hardly looked at,but i have looked at some of 50 years of BBC with trailer,1985 globe and start of next show.
And there's a few coronation street's lurking in the collection that could have old pres on!
BTW Mr. stabby,i've got 2 versions of the great trailer for Take Over TV!
I still have the last ever episode of Going Live on tape, from 1993 as well as an episode of Double Dare from 1989 too!! From a year earlier, I have a lot of Comic Relief's original Red Nose Day with the like of Jasper Carrott, Little & Large, Rory Bremner, Dame Edna, Phil Cool, the original Gunk Tank victim (Andy Crane) with Fry and Laurie pulling the lever.....
To ease my boredom I decided to watch an old video of some Star Trek episodes i recorded off Sky One from 1994, so i put the video on and was suprised to see some clean Sky Idents from that period, as well as astons they used to use to show which program you were watching when it returned from a break.
I also discovered the advert which was introducing the new season of Sky One, which would show the new American series "Friends" (Never heard of that) and a new Star Trek series called "Deep Space Nine"
Some other interesting finds too! Like the original "Nicktoons" animation on Nickelodeon which used to introduce the Nicktoons like Rockos Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy etc...
It's amazing how something you didn't care about at the time becomes so interesting now in hindsight.
What have you found on old recordings that you never knew you had?
Any chance you could cap some of that stuff.
It's funny that you should bring this up, a few weeks ago i wwent looking for old idents from my vhs collection and couldn't find a thing. my mother had taped over it all.
Loads of stuff from 1984 onwards, with a few bits and pieces from before. It was hard at the start as video tapes were a lot of money in those days, especially for a schoolboy!
I had a particular 'thing' about the original Channel Four logo, music and break fillers, and the LWT river ident. But lots of complete programmes (eg. Spitting Image series from 1986, Hot Metal, various live and highlights sports programmes, news, etc, etc. In all honesty, I'll never watch most of them all ever again, but fun to dip into occasionally and I would nevere throw them out. I should make a will for them and donate them to the Nation.
If I ever get a TV capture card and learn a bit more about using the PC and the Internet, I must do something about sharing the stuff.
I used to record The Simpsons from Sky 1 in 1997, when they still had the purple look, so I have loads of examples of continuity and idents, even as Mr Stabby said some have the onscreen caption at the end of the break telling you what show you were watching.
Now by accident, I have found a BBC2 continuity link from 1984 before an episode of Fawlty Towers, also found a BBC2 closedown from the 'TWO' era which my parents must have taped by accident, also a BBC1 closedown from 11.55pm on a Tuesday in 1992, again accidental as it was a last minute schedule change to show Match Of The Day, meaning the film which was supposed to have been taped, didn't air.
Also have some dodgy Channel 4 stuff from the early 1990's with adverts and the end of a Nightmare on Elm Street followed by the first 5 minutes of Empty Nest!
Also got some of an episode of The Hit Man and Her from 1989 with an ad break too, all of this which my parents had recorded, not me!
The other week I managed to find about 10 minutes of an episode of Home and Away from 1994.
The oldest thing I've ever found myself was part of the 1989 Tour De France. It was on the end of a tape of rave videos that somebody had compiled and given to me. There was a commercial break in there, but that was all. I did go through all the tapes we've had since we got out first machine in 1991 though, and found quite a few old 2's, some old HTV West, some Def II, etc.. And a load of PIFs from my Hitman and Her tape.
Tip: never let your mum tape over stuff, either steal the tapes and keep them in your room with the labels and tabs removed and re-labelled '(your name here)'s - hands off', or make compilation tapes of everything you find. I was quite shocked to find my Dad had been using one tape since 1991 in 2002, so anything of interest was wiped with crap Sunday night programmes and Dancer idents
I've only had mine since september and it's only got the TV in it!
I can't wait to get the video player joined up to the computer, and hopefully the DVD player!

"If your name's not down, you're not coming in...." - the Bouncer by Kicks Like a Mule..... Rave ROCKS!
They were the commercially available videos of Fantazia and Universe events, so just like the Hitman and Her, but without MS & PW, the crap music and drunk townies. Lots of wide eyes though
