To ease my boredom I decided to watch an old video of some Star Trek episodes i recorded off Sky One from 1994, so i put the video on and was suprised to see some clean Sky Idents from that period, as well as astons they used to use to show which program you were watching when it returned from a break.
I also discovered the advert which was introducing the new season of Sky One, which would show the new American series "Friends" (Never heard of that) and a new Star Trek series called "Deep Space Nine"
Some other interesting finds too! Like the original "Nicktoons" animation on Nickelodeon which used to introduce the Nicktoons like Rockos Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy etc...
It's amazing how something you didn't care about at the time becomes so interesting now in hindsight.
What have you found on old recordings that you never knew you had?
I found a tape with some Hit Mix Long Play on the end of it, presumably after someone left the tape running after the last programme that was on Sky One that night but whatever that was has since been taped over.
Ah yes, I love coming across old VHS's - I recently found one with some fab Ted May continuity in the Carlton era in Central land... It must have been quite late on though because a lot of the promos were saying what was on "ITV" rather than "Carlton"
I'm sure there's more older ones somewhere, I'll have to try and dig them out...
I found some old central stuff last year with 2 of the great word animations! The ones i've got are the broadcasting and generic idents.
I've also got carlton hearts,LOADS of citv from 2000[including christmas!],citv be part of it 2002 and citv 2003 with leah and roland rat!
I've got loads of old VHS recordings. Lots of Going Live! from 1991/2 - leading onto a promo for the new gameshow 'One to Win' with Tom O'Connor! (remember that!). TVS (south east) trailers and adverts. Saturday Live colourful titles and intro with Ben Elton from 1987. Beadles About from 1993 - with a plumber who is set up to deliberatley flood a house. Today's The Day (before the Weakest Link) with Martyn Lewis - 1997.
My collection is a little less inspiring. I've got some BBC One balloons, Channel Four circles (plus a Channel Four Racing "welcome back" sting with that great old music), Meridian idents/break bumpers from the final orange era, an ITN Evening News bulletin (short), an old ITV Weather "weather people" sting, a Sunlife sponsorship sting for Meridian Weather, some trails and programme slides from the BBC One "1" era, a "welcome back" sting from Scratchy & Co., a Meridian trail and promo-sting from the purple era, and some of the original Meridian hearts presentation from November 1999. Nothing remarkable. I also have quite an amount of CiTV and Disney Channel material from the past five years, but no tvguy, I cannot capture it.
I recently found my old "Knight Rider" tape from 1986, with the first ITV showing of the feature length season 4 opening
episode "Knight Of The Juggernaut" (The one where KITT got smashed up) Plus a regular episode also from season 4,
called "Knight Flight To Freedom" about a military coup (and an erupting volcano) in a small South American country.
I've got all sorts of old presentation dating back to 1988, but my biggest 'find' was something recorded quite by accident; a December 1988 recording from TSW. It's an uninterrupted recording lasting about 40-45 minutes which contains the last 10 minutes of Blockbusters (with animated Central endcap), a complete ITN 545 news bulletin, and the first 10 minutes of TSW Today. Aswell as that, there is of course all the bits in between - a fairly substantial commercial break with loads of old commercials and plenty of IVC from Ian Stirling. Two features of the presentation I found particularly interesting were the complete lack of trailers - all programmes were promoted live by the announcer, and also that TSW at that time was such a stalwart for IVC that even the clock announcement into the ITN news was partially in vision, only switching to the clock for the last few seconds.
They seemed to be having a curious technical problem on that day - whenever switching to or back from the network, the audio would fall silent for almost 2 seconds (although the picture changed seemlessly)
I've got tapes from the Morcambe and Wise 1979 Christmas show onwards. Things like the Good Life (although that must have been the first round of repeats), Fame and a smattering of BSB's The Power Station morning show with Chris Evans. I never used to clip anything and always taped 5 minutes or so either side of what I wanted, so there will be tons of old continuity in it.
When I moved house about 4 years ago they all went into the garage for storage. I'll bet they're ruined with damp now.
