And Alexia , "Music" is Cerddoriaeth or Cerdd , depending on the context. Miwsig is a South Welsh "Welsh-i-fying" of the English word, but is not standard Welsh and would never be used as such.

You obviously missed the crux of my post - i.e. dripping in irony.

Ahh yeh, I kinda get it.. Sorry! Thought for a minute you were trying to give a correct dictionary translation there Smile

I don't think it's the fact that S4/C produce rubbish, it's just the fact that the vast majority of people on the Forum cannot understand the Welsh language and choose not to watch S4/C for this, or they can't get access to the service. I'm sure they do a fine job, I don't understand a word of Welsh.

It's not that difficult. Here's a handy translation guide:

Ambiwlans - Ambulance
Plant - Children
Miwsig - Music
Sied - Shed
Rygbi - Rugby
Stadiwm - Stadium
Bocs - Box
Tri - Three
Gem - Game
Trenau - Trains

Even less difficult is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Wink

Well no - Welsh like English evolved from the languages surrounding it - so a lot of words are shared - i mean whoever decided to call an ambulance an ambulance must have had a reason - and it was just Welshified.

Good point about the word Ambulance. The German word for ambulance is something like "kranken-wagen" (sp?) which literally means something like "illness vehicle". That name makes total sense! Smile Whereas the English word "ambulance" does not contain any elements of other English words that would convey its purpose or its vehicular nature. English is a bloomin' dog's-dinner of a language, really...

Welsh is a very old language mush!!!! Everyone spoke Welsh in Britain in the 6th century until the Anglo-Saxons came and robbed all our land. Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe.
FROM WIKIPEDIA
The earliest extant sources of a language identifiable as Welsh go back to about the 6th century, and the language of this period is known as Early Welsh. Very little of this language remains. The next main period, somewhat better attested, is Old Welsh (Hen Gymraeg) (9th to 11th centuries);

One of the few words i know in welsh is Gorsef which is station. When i went there as a kid I kept thinking that we were in a town called Gorsef because I kept seeing signs saying 'Gorsef Station' Rolling Eyes

LOL, it's actually gors a f , but close enough. Wink

I was going to say.... Welsh is one of the oldest languages still in existence and pre-dates the majority of what is spoken around the world, including English, by a long way.

Incidentally, the post made earlier with the Welsh "translations" are there purely for irony's sake and are not representative of real Welsh. They are examples of a few more modern words where the most common usage is a slight "Welsh-i-fying" of the word used in English... but there are occasionally "proper" Welsh words to replace these, but in the South especially where few people speak Welsh, they are not used in favour of more English translations.

Ambiwlans - Ambulance
Plant - Children
Miwsig - Music - Cerddoriaeth
Sied - Shed - Penty
Rygbi - Rugby
Stadiwm - Stadium
Bocs - Box - Blwch
Tri - Three
Gem - Game - the plural is far different: chwaraeon and could possibly be used singularly, as chwarae - i.e. to play a game
Trenau - Trains

Welsh is a very difficult language to master if you've not been brought up speaking it... I heard a great quote the other day comparing learning it to something almost impossible... I wish I could remember what it was! My English father has lived in Wales since long before I was born 23 years ago, and despite the rest of us all speaking Welsh, he can still only understand a very very small amount, barely a few words.
