What are the English for?

They make some lovely cakes -- bakewell tarts, for a start. Those Cornish pasties are nice too. Not too sure on the whole faggots business though, bit sinister for me.

Don't forget that England is also the home of Neon Radio.

I cannot stand those Bakewell tarts, I love Cornish pasties though, my fave pasty!

I know what your views are on welsh food - what did you call Bara Brith and Lava Bread again Laughing I like Welsh cakes though

I have to agree with Owan on this, I am sick of people going on and on about England winning, its been over a week now and on the tv they are still going on about it! I said a week ago that we'd never here the end of it didnt I!

Quote:

My pet hate is just the Welsh. They come over every Saturday, walking round the market, speaking their language.

Why shouldnt they speak their language, I mean do you never speak Welsh then?

Strewth, it's over a week now is it ? Blimey, so England win the World Cup in Rugby and should stop talking about if after a week because we're upsetting the Welsh ?

*REALITY CHECK*

This is a significant achievement, look at the time England won the World Cup in 1966, it's still spoken of to this day. If you don't like it after a week, maybe you should opt out of life or emigrate to Outer Mongolia or somewhere.

Can't wait for the Sports Personality of the Year this year, that ought to upset the Welsh Whingers. Laughing

I am *not* upset that you are still talking about it BUT I dont see what there is to still *talk* about when ok, fair enough, you did win and well done to you - we arent as bitter as you are trying to make out. BUT what else is there to say now? You've won....and........what next?

When the celebratory tour around London happens fair enough there is another reason to mention it but otherwise I cant see the relevance of bringing the subject up just to use as a catalyst to have a go at your fellow Countries (again!)

Lets draw a line under the subject.

Im not saying it isnt a significant achievement - good for you, but what else is there to say, there is no need to go on and on about it.

And YOU were the person who started this by posting in the Wales thread last week about it, surely you knew that would be a bad idea

Hello there, young Jez. If all this tension has come from that post then I apologise -- but at least two people haven't recognised where it came from.

So, for anyone else [I thought it was quite a famous quote], Anne Robinson said it on Room 101 the other year, when she put <the Welsh> into Room 101 -- and she was talking about Liverpool. The Welsh press afterwards had a field day.

Upsetting *some* Welsh. Anyway, you love the Welsh really. Imagine life without Superted, Fireman Sam and Huw Edwards?

And this is undoubtedly why BBC Wales have their own Sports Personality of the Year show as well.

Hmm, not sure really what impact they have had on SE's life though.

Ooo, I forgot Bonnie Tyler and Kwik Save -- two more things I'm *certain* he can't live without.

So yes, Powergen Sponsorship.

I just saw one of them, and don't see what the problem is. So what, their slogan isn't said in the voiceover and there's no music, but are there any rules saying there have to be?

They keep going on about it because the majority of the English couldn't give a flying **** about rugby - it's still largely an upperclass game there - even after all this time, so they have to pretend - the media that is. Good luck to all the English rugby fans I have met over the years -we have bought each other other numerous pints -they're not the problem: it's the English media that are like a dog with a bone and they'll worry this story to death over the next 30 years, especially as they almost lost it to Wales at the 1/4 final stage - could have been another nearly season. Shades of Wembley.....
And the sports personality of the year will be the usual fix as well.....

pasty is a Welsh/Cornish word.

My super duper etymological dictionary insists pasty comes from Middle English. And anyway Cornish is simply Welsh with anglicised spelling -- there are really only a handful of real Cornish words.

Cornish pasties from Cornwall are fabulous though, bigger than your head they are.

And as I said, BBC Wales are contenting themselves with their own Sport Personality of the Year programme in ready anticipation of being ignored by the 'British' sporting media.

Stop it, I'm salivating! I am a vegetarian pasty addict, I confess!! Last holiday in Cornwall, I had nine of them in one week!
