I’d argue that the remake a couple of years ago just got it incredibly wrong and came across as taking the p out of the original. Department stores (that are remaining) have changed significantly; basing the idea around a current iteration of a field of make up, perfume and cosmetics counters could have been a good way to bring it up to date.

AIUI the remake was set in 1988 so it probably reflected the layout of stores of the time. I do agree it was garbage. I've never understood remakes or reboots.

Oh the remake was awful! I'm a huge fan of the original show, and the remake actually made me quite angry at how whoever wrote it had no idea whatsoever about the style of comedy AYBS did so well!

The 'Dear Sexy Knickers' sequence from one of the early episodes is one of my favourite moments of a sitcom ever. It's the perfect set up of misunderstandings and comic lines that Lloyd and Croft were the masters of.

I don't hold out much hope for the C5 documentary, especially if it focuses on "you'd never do this now" type commentary.

We'll just have to wait and see. As with all programmes from the past we are applying 21st century knowledge and experience to a 20th century issue. Now I'm convinced that Lloyd and Croft were not sexist, racist, homophobic or misogynist. They were writing to what the prevailing attitudes were at the time. (Its worth noting here that It Ain't Half Hot Mum has not been transmitted on mainstream television since the mid 1980's).

BBC Two, September 2nd, 2000.
Last on BBC One in 1995, August 21st at 7pm.

(according to Genome, which of course was the published schedule which may not be what actually went out)

It's been on UK Gold quite frequently down the years though, which is hardly being buried away from the general public.

Hmm. I could have sworn that an edition of "It Was Alright In The 70's" mentioned its scarcity on mainstream TV.

The cast & set of the remake was very good however the writing was quite poor. The premise of the programme remains do-able however you need a decent studio set up with experienced studio production staff. The only show in which that has been obvious would be Mrs Brown's Boys.

With respect, that's "light entertainment" clips show, not a documentary. Those things are hacked together quickly and it panders to the stereotypes to say "this was heavily controversial and hence why it hasn't been seen on TV since 1981" or whatever ridiculous factoid was on the Wiki page at the time.

I'd say do your own research rather than repeating ad-nauseum what the show said, the Genome project is useful for date finding on the BBC with the caveat that it was the schedule and not what was transmitted, but it'll be more reliable than the clips show.

Gotta say, though I try to admire a lot of old TV before my time, this and Only Fools and Horses (which I just don't find all that funny) leave me cold, but seem to be repeated an awful lot.

Based on the admittedly very quick research I've done the situation is somewhat confusing. The Daily Express has this article from 2015:

https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/617487/BBC-bosses-It-Aint-Half-Hot-Mum

And as it was pointed out earlier the last time that an episode was shown on mainstream tv was here:
https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/120/20?q=It+Ain%27t+Half+Hot+Mum#search

Now as has already been pointed out BBC Genome is a fantastically useful resource but as they themselves pointed out its based on what was the Radio Times had in its issues and didn't and indeed couldn't make any changes to their schedule as a result of unforeseen/unforseeable events

The only rationale I can find for this (and bear in mind this is my opinion) is that even though according to the Express article the show as a whole hasn't been on mainstream tv since 1984 a one-off showing as the Genome article doesn't count and was a one off.

Of course the BBC of 1984 couldn't foretell the technological changes of the next 30 or so years and the demand for repeats of old shows.

IAHHM just became one of those shows- like The Goodies- that didn’t seem to get a repeat after a certain point, whereas most shows did (given how many repeats there used to be pre-2000s).
