Or they could just post under one username at work with one ISP, and then post under another username at home using a different ISP.

Out of curiosity, if someone is banned, how easy is it to re-register?

People mention IP addresses, whatever those are, to see where people are from, but if someone posting using, for example, a Freeserve address, who is banned, would they have to change ISP's, from Freeserve to MSN, before they could re-register, or would they be able to re-register using Freeserve ?

Just something that's puzzled me over the years!

I heard somewhere that Freeserve uses different IP ranges so IP blocking doesn't work as it changes every time the user connects and it's probably going to go onto a different range. I'm probably talking a load of rubbish though. Not sure what it's like with other ISPs, we've been using Freeserve/Wanadoo since it launched.

Off topic but still on the topic of ISPs, we've signed up for Broadband with some other ISP quite a while ago but the local excahnge (Consett 01207) is running at maximum ADSL capacity and needs to be upgraded. The email didn't say much more, so does anyone know where I might be able to find out when they might upgrade it?

If the usual suspects are going to bang on with the usual moans, let them get on with it as far as I'm concerned! Smile

Try www.adslguide.org - great website, they'll surely have the answer there.

I think anybody that posts crap on TVF from work/school/college/uni is rather silly to do so. But it is possible, although not recommended as you may get into trouble with the IT department should you get reported. I don't know if Asa used the IP banning facility but you could get an entire organisation banned from visiting because of one spammer!

Alternatively they could just get another email address from another ISP and sign up then. There are quite a few ways around it and anyone with half a brain could work out how to do so.

I'd think that would be unlikely. Quite how some of the people on here remember to breathe is beyond me.

Hey!
Ok.. I had a dream and i remembered a TV Show that i *think* the BBC used to show (BBC more than likely) it was a bit.. weird but i did enjoy it.

I *think* the show's name was 'Either/OR', i went through a strange phase when i liked stuff that was black and white and a bit freaky (hehe).

Basicly the idea of the show was you had an audience, and the prefernter (Possibly Russell Grant.. but he seems a bit young for a show that was produced like 8 years ago) asked them questions, with 2 answers, and then if they were wrong (in his opinion) he made them put on the masks of ananimity(?)..

Or Something i have tried to make this post now too vague, but i may have been getting the details all wrong and it might throw you off the sent (in that case... sorry!!).

Can you help?

Matthew

To speak technically about the banning process, it's not difficult to circumvent. TV Forum has disallowed people from registering using "freebie" email addresses, which goes some distance, but clearly doesn't solve the whole problem

Yes, it's pretty easy to get back on after you're banned. There's no question about that. But unless we turn the site into some SSL-enabled vault, there isn't going to be a way to keep it completely free of those people. That's not the point of an internet forum. If you want to be cliquish, then start your own board and see how many people sign up. See? Just what I thought.

On a separate, more personal note, as a moderator, I tend to be a lazy, surly, asshole of an American. I eat ten cheeseburgers a day and fart George W Bush bumper stickers. I ignore all the problems the forum has, and I never ban anyone that should be banned. I ignore blatant violations of the T&Cs when long-standing members are concerned. I am -- in fact -- a virgin. I'm biased, and I don't care. For all intents and purposes, I am incompetent. Since I was elected, I have done nothing but purposefully hasten the eventual downfall of this forum. I have a stick up my arse, but yet am not tough enough on the bad apples. And, perhaps most importantly, I am in the wrong time zone.

Welcome to the thankless job of forum moderation. Hopefully now you can at least appreciate why I ignore you.
