I guarantee My Family will be one of the shows (along probably with Traffic Cops) that gets the most viewers (or actually gets any viewers at all).

...so many times on g.o.l.d.

It's not called G.O.L.D. anymore.

They dropped the ridiculous backronym months ago. It's just GOLD now! Wink

Good job they ditched the eye before they got the rights to Series 5 of Doctor Who.
Imagine all the gags you could have when they aired 'Eleventh Hour'

I don't see any point in these channels showing recent stuff. Anyone who could of watched things like Doctor Who would have watched it when it was first broadcasted on the BBC Smile

I guess they cater for the viewer who enjoys programmes interrupted by adverts, scenes badly edited out to fit in more trailers and cut for content even at 2am. It's a niche market.

I could understand the purpose of this channel if it was on Freeview and acted as a showcase for their other channels but as it stands it is totally useless and all of its programmes could quite easily be shown on one of UKTV's other services

They had Freeview showcase - Brightideas and lots of people thought that was pointless too.

It's basically lots of programmes that don't fit anywhere else on UKTV - they don't have a drama channel any more for example.

It's quite a random channel, one minute it's wall to wall Traffic Cops, then a family Film then a whole evening of Outtake TV.

It should just be a commercial version of BBC One, minus all the PSB stuff. As said the reason why it was created was for Richard & Judy's programme, and for all the other stuff that didn't fit into UKTV's other channels (most notably new NEW programmes on Gold), but it just seems to be nowhere at the moment.

That's exactly what it is, a general channel like BBC1, the problem is that in the digital world they don't work that well hence most of it's peers are genre-specific. The big problem is, like Bravo which is closing, that it doesn't have a USP any more - everyone knows what Gold, Dave, Challenge, Living and Discovery are but Watch is a mis-mash

The channel wasn't created for Richard and Judy, they just joined to host a flagship show and launch the channel (even though it does seem they were sold a pup - Richard seemed to think it was going to be on Freeview). They were it's USP

UKTV Bright Ideas was just home programmes though, it certainly didn't cover the range of genres that Watch goes for.

Alibi is a drama channel (granted it focuses on crime) and I genuinely think that Gold could quite easily revert back to its old structure of mostly comedy with some other stuff like Doctor Who and whatever without needing a refresh. Surely people generally still associate the name with that mix of content?

Bright Ideas started out showing programmes that had been produced for UKTV, which happened to be mainly home shows and it stuck with that until its demise.

As for GOLD, I would say a lot of people associated that name with comedy more than anything else.

It was lifestyle programmes, but then at that time UKTV didn't commission anything else (only in the last few years have they started to commission their own entertainment shows). FTN was the same, it only showed home grown programmes not bought-in repeats.

It does more than 'focus' on crime... it only shows crime dramas!

Comedy was probably always the major draw to Gold, I think more people associate it with comedy than anything else. If Dr Who etc was moved onto it then surely it would be in the same position that Watch is now... unfocussed?

I've never thought of GOLD being a channel focusing on comedy.

I always think of it the same way as the original UK Gold - just a mixture of older programmes, although getting steadily newer in recent years.
