Not a very good one!
It's the same as HD/SD now... upconverting SD video doesn't suddenly make it HD quality
As I say I really don't think they could have launched 4 channels from old equipment left behind, they would have had to have set it up from new and that would have been digital - SDI video, servers, digibeta etc. It might well have been that the established popular channel, Gold, moved into an old ex-BBC suite for a bit while the new channels got the new kit (which could also explain the edited on captions)
When it launched it only went out in analogue - there was no digital TV then. Gold was on satellite along with the 'UKTV preview channel' and the others were on cable.
It could have, but I suspect it just wasn't worth changing everything over when they were going to move soon after. Also it's up to the client, they were late to the 16:9 party but the reason why is up to them - it seemed odd ot me
Surely shoving an MPEG-2 converter on the end of an analogue system creates a digital feed?

When the network launched it only went out in analogue as well - one analogue Satellite uplink which then was taken by the regional cable companies. If they had a digital system they'd have to convert it the other way I suppose.

Also - they were not able to go widescreen until they moved to Red Bee (despite the presentation and much of the content existing in 16:9). Surely a digital system could have coped?
