In the grand scheme of things I would say its relatively cheap to make.

Only Nick Knowles will be paid a presenting salary. The others will likely just be paid for their labour. And other crew like cameras will be minimal compared to a studio-based set up.

Yes you have the cost of the materials too factor in too, but compared to other shows it won't entitle a massive crew like other shows.

It seems an odd move when the likes of the Martyn Lewis Money Show is doing relatively well on itv.

Indeed, the BBC should be embarrassed for not evolving Watchdog with the times. Joe Lycett's Got Your Back on Channel 4 shows consumer affairs can be done in a way that appeals to a younger audiences, and isn't just complaints about utility bills and white goods.

Funny the press release says it gives the show the benefit of a "year round presence" which is more or less what it used to have before they started cutting it down into short runs.

It wasn't all year round in the past - under Lynn and John it ran for six months a year, and it was only half an hour too. Much like Points of View, I doubt its extended runs in those days were due to any great Reithian ideas any more than it made for a cheap and effective way to fill a slot.

Of course there were the umpteen spin-offs in those days, for all who say The One Show is on too much, at the turn of the century the 7pm slot on BBC1 was absolutely dominated by Watchdog and Holiday spin-offs. Some of those were of seriously questionable value, I would say, at its worst Weekend Watchdog especially would make The One Show look like Panorama, with live bands. I've said this before but I remember once Weekend Watchdog ending with a performance by Steps, followed by Top of the Pops beginning with a performance by Steps of the same record.

It also begs the question what the BBC is planning to fill the vacated slots with - more repeats of DIY SOS?

Sad cost-cutting times.

I know the Beeb is making cuts but this makes it sound like Tony Hall is one step away from organising a whip-round outside Broadcasting House.

This is like the mention in the lottery thread of ITV taking it on now it "has all this free space" because they've axed a couple of shows. Channels axe and commission shows all the time. Watchdog itself was axed after its original run in 1985, and only came back because they invited Lynn Faulds Wood to make a consumer show for daytime and she suggested it should be a revival of Watchdog.

Even in the hour slot of recent years Watchdog was technically only a half hour show, the other half was 3x10 minute Rogue Trader segments

Well, that doesn't make it a half hour show, they were all made by the Watchdog production team and wouldn't exist without the programme. Most of the features in The One Show are made by indies, that doesn't mean The One Show is technically a five minute show.

You would think like parts of watchdog could be on BBC News under business or something like that. A lot of Watchdog was fluff anyway. Might help strengthen the One Show if they get a result. The fact the Watchdog twitter has not said a word says everything.

In terms of DIY SOS I read a interview somewhere that said health and safety rules have effected the show a lot. They have to plan everything and get it signed off and there can only be so many people on site. All these thing made the build go on longer than 9 days which mean they cost a lot more to make.

I wonder if this has as much to do with changes to the One Show. Could Matt Alright be lined up to replace Matt Baker? Could they make one One Show a month a Watchdog special with Nikki besides Matt, with special reports on an ad-hoc basis? I don’t see much difference with between filling an episode of The One Show with filling an episode of Watchdog cost wise.

Who remembers 'That's Life' with Esther Rantzen? The One Show/Watchdog combination feels quite nostalgic.

Suspect the bulk of the work for DIY SOS projects is free, aka the labour where every man and his dog comes out to "lend a hand" for "these nice people who really deserve it". Number of plasterers, plumbers, electricians and whatever else turn up to get their fizzog on the gogglebox, no doubt for a free plug or two.

Pretty sure the budget will pay for the materials and for the "talent" to stand there, look pretty and cry their eyes out at the end of the show.

A lot of the raw materials are donated too from the trade which is kind given they don't get a plug for it.

The new primetime run of The Repair Shop might take its slot.

This also feels like a regressive step given they went to all the effort of moving Watchdog from London to Salford. And now it's coming back again, though only as a weekly One Show item.

I guess the BBC's regional quotas diktat no longer applies here then.

Not sure where the presenters are matters. The production team will still make the content from Salford. I very much doubt it will be weekly either in the long run.
