It's neck and neck at the moment so we need some new people to come and vote.........
I personally voted widescreen as even though now I have a widesceen TV I liked watching programs in 16:9 format anyway when I had a 4:3 set! The picture seemed to be much nicer and clearer back then and I hated seeing the national weather reverting back to 4:3 for somereason.
Widescreen in my view is good, the black bars everyone complains about are not such a big issue. God there not massive ones that block out half the picture on some films I've seen once or twice and so I thing people should welcome widescreen as a benefit for better viewing, firstly because of that improved quality and secondly because the format is suited to our eyes' panormaic view anyway.
Appreciate Widescreen, other countries don't have it so consider it to be a healthy benefit!
Thank You (Sigh!)

Widescreen is by far superior. The picture quality is better and you see more of the pic. I like the black bars though - it makes it look more cinematic -- I need to get a widescreen tv though!
It's pretty 'amazing' how quickly American TV has embraced widescreen -- six months ago there was none, and now the premier shows are all in widescreen -- finally America's gotten the idea! But I can't stand how some spell it WIDE SCREEN -- there isn't supposed to be a space!
If a programme is 16:9 it by no meaas says you see any more picture. Technically (and in amy ases this is true) 4:3 can have the same width as 16:9 but 30% more pic on the top and bottom. And 16:9 there is no difference in picture quality just thats what yuo choose to belive.

was widescreen a british invention or something - because i cant recall seeing any american tv in the format. eg. ABC World News Tonight is filmed in 4:3 (i think) and broadcast on news24 which is widescreen, and ends up having black around all 4 sides lol. i mentioned that, because i would imagine news studios would be kitted out even if reports come in other ratios.

Hi Folks
I've voted widescreen although i rather liked 5 : 4 before it was
changed to 4 : 3 - it's just a matter of what you are used to or comfortable with... wonder whether there will be future changes to even wider cinema formats. The only thing is, i think wide formats look silly in small screen sizes - remedy: get a bigger TV - sigh!

Why is when you watch a W/S program on a widescreen Television it still apears squashed and black line at the top and bottom?

Presumably you are watching analogue.
You can only get proper widescreen broadcasts when watching digital TV. Your TV may have a 14:9 setting though, which will remove the small back bars used on analogue.
I'm a widescreen fan. I still have a 4:3 tv but set my digital box to widescreen (actually onDigital calls it 'letterbox' - ugg).
I prefer it simply because the composition of whats on screen seems more pleasing to my eye. Notice how close actors have to stand next to each other in 4:3 based programmes. We're used to seeing it, but it is actually quite unnatural. A widescreen programme gives actors a little more space.
As was stated in another thread, Coronation Street will probably have to rebuild some sets because of the w i d e r view.

What's the like…'ultra letterbox/widescreen' format called -- You see it a lot on older movies, how the black bars take up an enormous amount of room … anyone know what I mean?
