I spotted this VT clock in the middle of a promo for "Lewis" on UTV yesterday but I thought it was just a one off. I then spotted it again twice today so it has obviously been recorded into the promo. It appears just as the graphics come on to the screen at the end. Does this occur on the ITV1 version?

Any idea what the "Overtype" and "Page 1" are for?

Page 1 is fairly self-explanatory - it indicates that it's the first page and not the second or the third. Clock Generators normally have a number of pages so that you can prepare several difffrent clocks in advance

Overtype is the typing mode, just like on a word-processor - if you're in overtype mode any typing will write over what's already there. The opposite of Overtype is Insert which is the method that we;re most common with (including when you type replies here)

Quite an interesting capture that. Seems that UTV are using a generic, and presumably taped, VT clock and using the caption generator to title the trail, rather than using the direct feed from a real VT clock generator each time. This is a practice TTTV used in the 80s and 90s due to outmoded and limited equipment, not something I'd have expected to see in 2006.

That will certainly be a UTV-only thing -- the typeface of the "Lewis" etc matches exactly the typeface and positioning of the final caption at the end of the UTV version of the trailer.

Don't be silly, they do have clock generators in their edit suites.

Chances are the promo was digitised into an Avid or Flame which is where many things are now produced within UTV and the only way to get a VT clock like that into the system is to use a taped clock and digitise it from VT.

As to why mid promo, chances are stray media on the timeline or a badly positioned matte key. The clock appears to be in the position where the video of the programme would appear on the endboard.

I didn't say they didn't have one, only that they appear probably not to be using it in this case, something which you yourself refer to in the following paragraph.

and I replied with the reasoning as to why it was like that Smile
