Gap between The Voice and BGT even wider, rising from 2.2m to 2.8m. Though, BGT did get a bigger average & peak. Still, thoroughly impressive. The BBC must be ecstatic!

Sounds good. Have you got a link to an article, I can't find it in the usual places?

EDIT: Found it! http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s154/the-voice-uk/news/a374257/the-voice-uk-britains-got-talent-ratings-soar-in-second-week.html

Very good performance. I expected a slump from the opening week to account for those just watching out of curiosity last week.

I would consider moving The Voice start-time to a later slot for the live shows.. Head to head it has a clear lead!

Head to head the gap has closed by almost half within a week - but good to see both shows up. I thought The Voice would rise slightly and BGT probably fall as I think it normally does for it's second episode - but rather than be overtaken by The Voice BGT has increased it's lead.

You need to remember that The Voice only has a clear lead because if you're watching a show from the start then you'll watch it until the end. The first few minutes of BGT are nothing special, just judges intros, crowd shots and maybe one or two auditions, whereas these shows save the best auditions until last so viewers wishing to watch both will stick with the one that started first.

It would be certainly an interesting battle should they go directly head to head but you need to remember BGT is still a monster show and won last night overall by around 2m viewers and if you include ITV +1 the BGT peak was 3m higher than The Voice.

Back to the content of the show, I found it a lot better last night even though the talent wasn't as good. It flowed much better and there were quite a few interesting results in there too. I do still think its lacking something but thats perhaps due to the producers claiming the show is something its not. It needs to take itself a little less seriously.

The thing that occurred to me when watching the two programmes last night is how 'nice' The Voice is. There's no nastyness or people being told they're crap, and no people being laughed at or pityed.

It was a bit of a contrast to the first 10 minutes of BGT where the narrative was 'Last time we came to Blackpool everyone was rubbish and here are a few more really bad acts'

Not so much nastiness but there were 2 or 3 moments on The Voice last night where having not buzzed them they then said they'd have had them on their team if they knew their age and what they looked like etc. (i.e that 17 year old opera singer) which kind of goes against the entire premise of the show. (I think though if any judge doesn't complete a team they can pick rejected singers).

Also just like the X Factor one of the initial selling points of it being a competition between the judges is in danger of quickly making the show all about the judges and not about the talent. The judges seem to care more about winning themselves (especially chief Cowell basher Tom Jones) rather than helping individuals to win.

That's the exact premise of the show - they DIDN'T get picked because of what they looked like or how old they were. It was on the voice and they decided against it. Just because that's the criteria doesn't mean they wouldn't kick themselves for not having the nerve to take a chance. Likewise, I'm sure there are occasions when they turn after hearing a voice and are disappointed with the personality that goes against it.

However, I think you're right - they seemed to sow the seed in the last programme of "missed opportunities" so I dare say some of those we have seen will get the chance to come back and still make the grade in some capacity.

No, it reinforces the entire premise of the show. It is all about the voice so they are judging it purely on the voice. For them to say that they would have picked someone had they known what they look like means that it is very different to The X Factor, where looks etc are something that is being judged is essential to the format.

The missed opportunity thing was an interesting part of this week's episode. There are no duff acts on The Voice (of course they all won't be to everyone's taste but that doesn't mean they're not good) but they still have to pick and reject and base that on some criteria. Seeing them wanting to say yes but not going for it is infuriating but good telly.

Incidently I wonder how the last act on last night's BGT would have done on The Voice. He certainly seemed a bit more of a Voice act than a BGT one (although certainly not an X Factor one as he was actually musical)

What I'm more amazed at is that ITV haven't dumped the scheduling strategy...

If I was an advertiser on ITV1 on Saturday night, I'd be thoroughly hacked off knowing that if I watched the Voice and Sky-Plussed BGT, I could zap through every single commercial break.

I agree but just think The Voice is at an obvious disadvantage starting that early.

For the live shows if they started it at 7.30-9.00 (and assuming BGT stayed 8.00-9.20) I think your logic would work and people who'd started watching The Voice would continue and it could beat BGT in overall averages. Just a thought.

I think it's a good show so far. Presentation wise, I'd have liked to see a bit more of the presenters but I guess they'll do more in the later shows?
