Although it is a big problem for The Voice not seeing acts for two weeks it's more about how they introduce us to them rather than the timing. After all we'd only seen the acts on BGT last night perform three times across the series - but viewers had a lot invested in them.
Cutting to three per team won't help as that cuts down the number of Blind Audition shows - the most popular aspect. I do think as things stand they should have had the double elimination in the first round of live shows so it was down to three per team, but ultimately the problem is with the entire concept of the show - a Voice means nothing if the singer doesn't have the more crucial aspect known as "The X Factor".
Take away the gimmick of the chairs, and there is nothing different here and it lacks the spark, edge and energy of the Cowell stable of shows.
There are still too many acts in the competition, and having them perform fortnightly against acts in their teams as opposed to openly against all the other acts is for me a flaw in the format. Presumably the team structure continues right to the end to ensure that all the coaches have an act in the final ?
Do the BBC actually have any flexibility to change the format they've bought the rights to ?
In a way I'm surprised they haven't made more use of the chairs turned away/concentrating on the voice thing. Okay, it wouldn't have worked for the battle round, but if the show truly is about 'the voice', the coaches don't actually need to see the contestants perform.
This seems especially relevant given Jesse has complained more than once about the extraneous stuff that's turned up on stage (and seems to be terribly inconsistent from one artist to the next).
Of course, taken to a logical extreme, if it really was just about the voice, then I guess it should be a radio show.
I know I keep banging on about the production and how its improving etc etc yawn yawn... but this weeks worth of BGT live shows have shown how amateur The Voice actually is. Holly Willoughby's dress was one of the biggest talking points last night which probably says it all about where the show is now. They need a big rethink for next year including a new line up of coaches, and perhaps air it from January instead where it won't get lost amongst the competition. The current line up is a bit pretentious and feels like a bit of a love in, yet oddly theres no chemistry and noone for viewers to relate to.
Have to admit, I see why Britain's Got Talent is still working. There seems to be more energy and enjoyment in the show than The Voice. I do think that The X Factor will have a problem like this soon though...
ABC start their own Voice rip off on the 24th, imaginatively called "Duets". Here's the promo where, bless them, they've tried to make out that it'll be different to every other music competition that's gone before with a mock of the Apple 84 advert.
Don't think its been noted here - apparently Jessie J's microphone failed last night on the show during one of the performances. I didn't catch the fault myself but MSN are reporting that she asked to start the song again?
Yes I saw it whilst flicking, the group performance IIRC was about to begin and she started complaining that her mic wasn't working, actually it was her earpiece. They had to restart it but they hadn't have bothered really, it was weak.
