Music and entertainment channel VIVA is to be axed from Freeview next Spring, as Viacom makes its first major channel distribution change following its recent acquisition of Channel 5.

Philippe Dauman, Viacom President and CEO announced the launch of the Spike brand here in the UK at a Broadcasting Press Guild event in London, ahead of a potential future international push for the brand. Spike will combine programming from the original US channel with content from Channel 5.

Viva is a pointless channel, its just filled with Muisc, with kids shows at 3-4pm and some repeats of Comedy at 6pm.

Hopeful the replacement channel "Spike"? will be far better. I cant see how it will last on Sky for much longer after next spring.

Suggestions that content from VIVA will be moved to 5*, from this article: http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/oct/08/channel-5-channel-4

I can see some of the content being dropped:

* SpongeBob SquarePants
* Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness
* Penguins Of Madagascar

* That '70s Show
* My Wife And Kids
* Catfish: The TV Show
* 21:00
* Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps
* Celebrity Deathmatch
* Awkward
* Are You the One?

Bar the occasional repeat of the odd sitcom I happen to like, I think VIVA is a terrible channel both in terms of presentation and content, so I wouldn't consider this a loss. Spike is something that intrigues me though, and it'd be nice to see a channel like this with some effort put into it... at least I hope that'll be the case.

VIVA isn't exactly great, there isn't much about it that I would consider make it much of a loss to Freeview. It will remain for the moment on Freesat, Sky and Cable, and it isn't exactly costing a hell of a lot of money to programme it right now, so, unless they are making a loss on it, I wouldn't expect it to close anytime soon.

Spongebob will move to Channel 5. It was mentioned when Viacom's takeover was completed.

Only thing I'll miss about Viva is when they continued with TMF's output of vintage (80s/90s)/new music before quietly dropping the older music for more chart drivel and more reality programming.

Not sad to be losing Viva at all. Much preferred it when it was TMF back in the day.

Looking forward to Spike TV though, not least for their coverage of the VGA's / VGX.

I remember there was a show that Bravo (gone since 2011) had and it was from Spike. I can't remember it's name, but probably there's a chance of that show coming back on UK TV screens...

Making that a pretty pointless post. Although if we were being kind we could take it mean to it'll be a similar type of channel to Bravo as they've seen a gap in the market. The American take on footage from Takeshi's Castle was made for Spike, to give an idea of the kind audience it's aimed at or at least was at one point in time.

Hope this means I can watch Scrubs in 4:3 if it gets moved to 5*.
