I'm wondering if that's a copyright issue - if that's even a thing - because of it not being officially broadcast in the country.

If it was when Channel was independent from ITV they might have chosen it because they thought that ITV plc would come after them because they would have been charging for access, but Channel Television wouldn't have bothered?

They aren't supposed to show any UK channels but itv would have no control over it anyway like the issue of over spill. I reckon it was probably the first itv they saw on the list and just thought that'll do I'll set that to channel 3. The same for BBC One - they just saw BBC One and thought that'll do. Us irish are easy going like that. Maybe except me though cus I'd be sorting that right out. Very Happy

Hotels can show what channels they want through their provider. I stayed in a hotel in Buncrana, County Donegal and they had 60 UK channels, including all BBC, ITV, Ch4, Ch5 along with the Irish channels. Great selection, compared to the good old days, when I remember my mum and dad would only select their Irish hotel as long as they said they had "multi-channel television" in the rooms. And that was in the early 1990s.

We stayed in a hotel in Luxembourg in May. The hotel had all UK TV channels that are available on Freesat in HD plus more ( plus similar for bordering countries) I don’t think I ever got to the end of the EPG !

That was because the signal overspilled from Derry. We had the same in Fermanagh apart from Channel 5 - you could only get Channel 5 up in Derry or Belfast on analogue I think.

In Dublin we stayed at a hotel in the IFSC area. The Clarion, now called The Spencer Hotel I think in 2002. They had 50 cable channels, incl BBC1 London, BBC2 London, ITV London and Channel 4. No Channel 5. Plus usual Sky News, CNN etc. Not bad.

I can't recall seeing UTV on many southern hotels actually or BBC NI. Most of them have Satellite/freesat. It must be because the Republic has no postcode so it just defaults to London.

Strange one in the Dublin hotel I was in recently - had ITV London and UTV on separate channels. Mind you the channel guide was somewhat all over the shop in general.

You can get UTV on 113 but you can also get ITV London in the 900's on freesat

The most surreal thing was being in central London, where I walked past a gym and they had ITV News Central on for the members on the treadmills, presumably as they were using a Sky box which defaults to ITV Central (West) on 103.

That also seems to happen in a number of Wetherspoons pubs if the event they have a TV switched on.

We do have postcodes (or “Eircodes” as they insist on calling them) now. However, in ITV’s case the default is actually Central rather than London and I’ve seen that pop up more often than not. However, Sky digiboxes that have actually been used for Sky in ROI don’t have any ITV region on the EPG, VM One is on 103. They are the exact same hardware as the U.K., so do ship with the default U.K. EPG until an ROI viewing card is inserted, but after that with most newer digiboxes nothing short of having a valid U.K. viewing card inserted will make then revert.

Add Channels feature on Sky can tune in all ITV channels for people in the Irish republic, such as ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 which arent available on the Irish EPG. I see Virgin Media Ireland do provide ITV3 and ITV4.

Sport is often slated though on ITV4.
