Didn't realise Richard Desmond's channels were involved in the initial testing.
The first *pubic* beta of iPlayer was January 2007, IIRC.

Oh yeah, I was trying to remember what form it took. I remember installing that little P2P program, it was a very awkward way of doing it. Last time I logged in on my old computer at work it was still there I think
Yeah it was definately just before Christmas as I remember it launching and then the remote control circuity in my box packed up a few weeks later so I couldn't use it anymore. Due to the festive period it didn't get sorted until the New Year.
Indeed, iPlayer went live at the end of 2007, though I was part of the BBC iMP ('interactive media player') testing group back in 2005/6. iMP was the precursor to what became iPlayer; back then, it was essentially a peer-to-peer download tool - no streaming of any kind, but included a local standalone player, much like the current iPlayer desktop.

I'm pretty sure you're right that it was around the same time - the end of 2005 - that Telewest started deploying Teleport; I remember feeling terribly spoilt at having a choice between downloading on-demand via iMP and watching on-demand through my TV.

Teleport was extended Telewest marketing though
I still think Teleport is a much easier way of naming the service rather than the actual "On Demand" brand they use now; "I watched it on Teleport" is much easier than saying "I watched it on Virgin's TV Choice On Demand"

Have you used the Sky service?
I happen to think it works very well. The fact that it's rather limited and still in development doesn't make it 'crap'.
Either way, it works better than the rather crap Sky service...

Yes, and every other attempt at usage results in a message saying "No Programmes Available, please ensure you have a Sky + subscription"

That sounds like a faulty box!
How come you have Sky broadband if you have Virgin Media for your TV?
