I had an S1 UK Tivo for many years (hacked to get listings over broadband and with the webserver allowing you to schedule recordings over the internet) and still miss it... The UI is just second to none. In the end the lack of HD and the extra encode/decode process just killed the picture quality too much for me (even with the Mode 0 picture quality hack)

Makes Sky+ look pre-historic, even with the new HD EPG. Media Center comes close - but still isn't as good.

If only Sky had done a deal with Tivo after their initial joint-venture in launching the S1 in the UK. The Sky channel line-up (50+ HD channels) with the Tivo UI would be brilliant.

The Samsung V+ was originally in the running to be upgraded to TiVo however it turned out that it can't run Flash which is what the current VM TiVo software is based on (The TiVo Premiere software from the US).

So, sorry to bump this thread, but I got my TiVo fitted yesterday. It's much faster than the V+, and I really like the HD menus/guide that now use widescreen instead of stretching 4:3. One weird thing I've noticed is that the BBC channel logos all follow the BBC One logo, with the small BBC logo followed by the large 'BBC' text. This includes News and Parliament, and even CBBC and CBeebies.

It's much faster when pausing, and the fast forward and rewind is more smooth, especially on the slowest option (to fast forward, I mean).


Worth the significant extra money?


For WishLists, a 1TB hard drive, better faster UI, and free repair thanks to me only renting the box?

Hell yeah!


The latter obviously also counts with V+ of course. I'm still not convinced that it's worth the money at the moment. When it comes down in price I'll consider getting one.

If you wait long enough you'll get one for free. They can't force you to spend extra to use necessary equipment on their service.

They could just cut you off though, or artificially increase the V+ charge to make it uneconomical compared to the TiVo replacement (as they did with Analogue TV services).

Two years according to a quote from someone at Virgin Media, I believe it was on a TechRadar article.

Boo hiss at the BBC not allowing the content from the iPlayer being accessible directly from the TiVo backward EPG, instead having to go via the iPlayer app.

ITV, Ch4 & 5 content is accessible, so it's an annoyance that you have to fire up the app for the BBC content.
