it looks like Sky are now running an advert urging viewers to ring 'ntl:virgin' in an effort to keep Sky channels on their platform. I've just seen it on Sky Sports 1 (watching on an NTL box).

Erm, why? That doesn't seem to make much sense though t'd make sense if it only airs on their movies and sports channels, somewhat roundabout way of saying "Beg us to keep our channels on your platform as it makes us a lot more money that way.".

the ad listed Sky One, Sky Sports News, Sky News and Travel as channels that could disappear. i thought the dispute was mainly about Sky One?

I'd only be concerned over Sports News and New going. Sky One and Travel are dull quite frankly. Sky One has no variety.

I'll get rid of the service altogether is they get rid of Sky One...

Would be totally pointless without that.

Still, it's odd that Sky would do this seeing as they're the ones using stronghand tacttics in order to get more for carriage of their channels. Then again, they are referring to the platform as "ntl:virgin" so it's probably no more than a weak gesture so people know they might lose channels for no reason.

It'll affect a lot more channels than just Sky branded, think it affects around 40 channels in all.

So Sky One will be disapearing the virgin cable service soon then?

Puts hand on phone ready to ring for cancel.

No, it's not definite but Sky are trying to push more money out of Virgin Media for carriage of their channels, if they win and VM don't pony up then the channels will leave and so will plenty of their suscribers. Sky knows that and anyway it goes it's win-win for them.

But why do VM have to pay for Sky to be on the service? Surely it should be the other way round?

But then there's the Sky brand and the revenue/subscriptions it brings in by being on there.

Think I just answered my own question there. Rolling Eyes

couldn't give a toss, but endless repeats of The Simpsons & Futurama.. Very Happy
But the main factor for me wanting it is Brainiac Science Abuse / Test Tube Baby.

It seems to be quite an immature thing for Sky to do (seeing as negotiations are still in progress).

I can just imagine Virgin Media subscribers dropping substantially if they do disappear from the EPG. I doubt old Dick will allow that to happen though.

It is exactly the reason Sky should be held to account.

I've said for years that the company should be forced to split into two, one providing "Sky digital" and one providing the Sky channels.

Thats quite a good idea. Sky One, Two and so on, and the Travel ones seem half-hearted on-the-side projects, but if they put all their time into them...

If they do, I might do the same, we should have the alternative of watching Sky One without using a dish. I only usually watch it for The Simpsons and Futurama, but it comes pretty damn handy and keeps me entertained.

Say what you like about Sky One, but it's a popular channel and if it did leave Virgin Media then I think it would be rather damaging for the company.

And in all the time I've had Cable TV I've never known the relationship between the Cable Companies and Sky to be so low, if we still had CWC the we'd have no problem, as that was basically Sky on Cable and often backed Sky on many things.
