I'm having similar problems with the On Demand service. Does anyone know of a quick solution to the 'Service temporarily unavailable' problem?
Nini's advice about rebooting the box was correct, but I hadn't read it before calling 151. I was really pi$$ed off by that point.
I got through to an Indian call centre (or an Indian at a British call centre I suppose). Whoever it was he was very nice. "I am very sorry to hear you've been having trouble, but let's see if I can help, Mr Scott". His approach certainly took the edge off my frustration, and I couldn't possibly have been snappy with him after that.
He took the Error code from me and said he would put me on hold for a few minutes while he looked it up. During those few minutes I rebooted the box and it started working.
I hung up before he came back to the phone, but I expect his advice would have been to do what I did.
I should have considered trying that first, but the error code on the MHEG banner made me think it was a service fault. Perhaps they should change it to read "Reboot your box as it is a bit crappy now Virgin have taken over".

Everything's a service fault (even when it's not), with NTL/Telewest you just accepted it after a while because of the POS hard and software. Eitherway, it was pretty crap before but at least allowed for soft reboots as Telewest code which the current VM software is based on was the worst coded of either NTL or Telewest and as such has got worse given it has to work with all boxes irregardless of if they'll flake out after less than 7 hours uptime.
Still? Oh, I dunno, Fox News UK in the shape of Sky News seems imminent doesn't it?
I find their Madaline section on their website very disturbing.
To be fair I've never had any problems with the BF's new virgin box. However his mother has noticed it crashing a few times, mainly due to her technique of "if it doesn't work immediately, jab the button nonstop"
Yeah I heard they have stopped upgrading some of the older paces as they can't take the update as some are 8 years old.
Fair enough in that sense, as I'd rather have it the way it is rather than the software being forced onto the STB making it even slower than what it is. I have a 1st Generation STB, only because it still has the Cable & Wireless logo on it...!
But on the other level I don't think it's fair that everyone pays for the same service yet the more loyal older customers have got crappy out of date STB's that cannot handle the software.
Even my cheapo Freeview STB from Asda is alot faster and better than my Virgin/NTL/CWC STB!
Yeah I got a pace at first lasted 3 days then got a sammy and now a V+ too.
I had a go at someone else's V+ the other week and I wasn't too impressed, as the channel changing seemed rather bizzare, especially if you wanted to select a channel whilst hovering the EPG rather than going up and down. I'm sure there's more to it, it was only a very quick go.
Some people have good and bad tales really, in our house we have 7 and 8 year old working STB's that are still going strong.
