This palava also disadvantages me in that I'm on taping duty for 24 and Lost for a family member.
SUCH an inconvience.
Exactly, I have a lot of mates and family with Virgin who have asked me to record the new series of 24 for them. They think that as I have Sky+ I can just stick it on record and give it to them, but I have to find spare DVD-RW's and the time to dub them off the box onto DVD.
Orry, well if you have Sky then give them your "Sky Anytime on PC" log-in and get them to download it themselves - easy!

Sky is controlled by a greedy, mean, foul, rude, anti-competitive, selfish, immoral old layabout.
I think you will find that the CE of BSkyB is about 35 years old, very professional and not a layabout from what I have seen of his speech at the Ofcom conference last year. He is a shewd businessman. I think you are referring to his father who is Chairman of NewsCorp perhaps?

That's the thing, they are making Virgin Central out to be a great service, but the content as it stands is nothing decent. Sky Anytime on TV make not be true VOD, but I've got a strage feeling it will be better than Virgin Central as it will probably have the same content as Sky Anytime on PC, which has a MUCH bigger library.
Virgin Central is just a showcase channel for some of the on demand programming, it does not tell the full picture. It's an attempt to combine on demand content with a linear channel.
There is a large volume of content available on Virgin's On Demand service, this is the latest list (lifted from somebody over at DS), all available to watch at anytime ;

With content being added all the time, as well as the Pick of the Weeks programmes from the BBC & 4oD, and deals with HBO, Warner, Buena Vista still to come, (including Lost Series 3 later in the year and Heroes), it's quite a line up.
Apparently they are also about to announce a major 'movie promotion' which will probably see some of their 500 On Demand movies being offered for free or at a reduced rate.
Sky Anytime will allow viewers to access up to 40 hours of TV, downloaded to a section of the Sky + hard drive, Virgin has 1,000's of hours of content, due to it's return path which allows for viewer interaction. Sky's solution is not true VOD, and is pretty limited, everyone receives the same satellite signal, whereas with cable, video streams can be sent to individual receivers.
Virgin Media now run a 100% VOD service where all the videos are located on servers at Virgin Media and played to the user live with full pause, stop, fast forward and rewind controls. The VM VOD totally encompasses the whole VOD criteria.
WHEREAS
The Sky solution of giving everyone much bigger hard drives on their Sky boxes which utilises about 50% of the boxes space to download specific content to their box does give the Sky user some VOD functionality.
Of course say 40-50 hours worth of Sky programming vs 1000's from the Virgin Media catalogue does clearly illustrate the huge difference between both services.
The Sky option is pretty good considering the limitations on the broadcast method - but it would slightly annoy me if I wanted to use the extra space on my box for personal Sky+ recordings!
PS that list above of VM programmes is much much bigger when you add all the BBC and Channel 4 programmes like Eastenders, Casualty, Skins...etc.etc. It really is a great catch-up method for watching that weeks best programmes that you totally forgot about!

This is quite true - Virgin Media's VOD library is very impressive. However, the wider library of programming is only available if you pay for the TV Choice On Demand package, which costs £5.00 a month.
For those who don't want to, or can't afford to, pay that fee, they are left with the "week on demand" service, which includes 4OD, BBC and VM programming from the previous week, and the abysmal Virgin Central service - which isn't quite a fitting replacement for Sky One.
