Challenge to replace on DTT.

Great News Very Happy

I like Challenge. Couldn't really justify forking out for Sky for only a handful of channels I'm ever going to watch, but the problem's been solved as if it's now coming to Freeview I can watch it there instead.

I'm not pleased with this news, considering Sky3 is sh*t and Channel One has some fairly decent shows like Home Improvement and The Fresh Prince. The only way for this to turn out good (for my own personal standards) is if Challenge reverts back to its good days with live in-vision along with a general sense of care for the channel, and if Channel One's programming is relocated.

Home Improvement moves around the EPG like there's no tomorrow, if one broadcast group drops it somebody else will pick it up, most likely the Paramount channels. Pretty much guaranteed rating-grabber for something made best part of 20 years ago now.

Fresh Prince is a mystery to me as to why it's so popular. Therefore I will not be missing it.

Sky3 is only "sh*t" because it lives on pretending to be Sky Travel and airing endless repeats of archive Road Wars episodes with dodgy edits in order to fit a third ad-break in. I dread to think what people expect Sky1 and Sky2 to be like if Sky3 is supposed to be a "trailer" for the rest of the network.

Challenge has been totally run down recently, it definitely seems that VMTV were looking to shut the channel down. I am concerned that Challenge will simply become an outlet for Sky Bet. I'd hope they'd at least do a "Challenge 2" or whatever (which could remain pay-TV) following the present format.

That's more or less what Challenge Jackpot is for.[/quote]

Challenge Jackpot as it stands today under Roulette will be dead by the end of next year I reckon. The roulette market seems to have fallen through, even half the autowheel stations have packed it in. Probably move towards gambling in general as opposed to simply roulette.

Isn't the subtext here that Sky have been able to buy Virgin 1 and then rebrand it, close it and transfer the shows that they wanted to their channels on their pay-TV platform, rather than a Freeview (non-pay) channel?

However it has Flextech in the name servers, until December 2010, and as we all know Flextech came about after Telewest got involved. Flextech was the original name of what became the Virgin Media channels that are now part of the Living TV group which is owned by Sky.

The original name was 'United Artists' wasn't it?

Sky 3 is on Freeview of course, though I do get your point.

The Liverpool Daily Post and Echo's cable television service was called Channel One.
I guess that shut.
Not much of a trace of it online. Found this:

There were 'Channel One's in London and Bristol too. The London one was based in the old Channel 4 building in Charlotte Street. The Liverpool one was part owned by Trinity Mirror too (which seems odd as they were involved in that other cable channel, L!veTV)
Both closed in 1998 http://www.dmgt.co.uk/media-centre/overview/year/1998/id/321

Yep - but I bet it won't be showing the decent Channel 1 shows Wink Which is the point.

I hope they don't drop Dog the Bounty Hunter.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up on Sky 1/2

Although not a massive loss, it still beggars belief that the OFT just wave through the deal despite the obvious competition concerns. FTN/Virgin1 may have outlived initial expectations, but (and admittedly this is as a non-Sky viewer) I thought Bravo was one of the best examples of a niche targeted channel and certainly have never seen it as a rival to Sky1, so quite surprised that got axed.

Perhaps it's a more polite way of saying it was awful and nobody watched it?

"Men's lifestyle" channels have pretty much kicked the bucket by the looks of things, not that I mourn their loss.
