I take your point.
I'm working from the simplistic (dumbed down?) point of view of the content being of the same "strength" as it used to be, but the duration being shorter, therefore less of it.

Without getting into a major English debate about terminology, surely extending the programme by 3 hours would be "dumbing down" if the content were compromised. Perhaps I'm playing devil's advocate here, and usually I do, but perhaps in some situations compressing the programme would get rid of the waffle used to drag out an otherwise-exhausted item. How can you place the emphasis of "dumbing down" on time and time alone?

I dislike the phrase "dumbing down" but I fail to see how this new style is going to be anything but that. I'm not too worried about whether it's on for an hour or half an hour, but it's clearly going to be more trashy and sensational than it used to be. I only watch (or listen) to current affairs on the BBC now just to see how bad it can get - they still surprise me. The last Panorama I watched was about tax fraud or something and was packed full of gimmicks and clichés presented by Justin Rowlatt in his awful chummy style. It's really gone down the pan, a dog turd of a programme which is soon to get worse.

Sounds very similar to the 1970's Panorama which had david Dimbleby introducing the items...
'What do you mean we don't have the film about Rhodesia or the IMF? What do you expect me to show the viewers of Panorama tonight?'

I was hoping it would be his brother, Tim Vine. He'd liven the show up a bit.

Paxmen was the only man for Newsnight
remember Micheal howard......
Did you threaten to over-rule him? Fourteen times Paxo asked that before he got a straight answer out of Michael "pee-pul" Howard.
Who else other than Paxo could do that? He must have great faith in his bosses or vice versa! They are probably scared of him.
JV does a decent job on R2, he is usually fair when 'chairing' debates. That said, he isn't Paxman or Sir Jimmy Young

Of course the truth is the next bit of VT went down during the course of the Howard interview, and so Paxman had to string it out to fill til the end of the programme. He's admitted it was just an easy way to pad things out.

Oh right, I never knew that! Thanks, how interesting
... I wonder if Michael Howard is/was aware of this
It's still a good example of how politicians try to waffle their way out of questions they don't like answering

That woule be funny. When I think of Panorama being hosted I cannot help but think the Not The 9 O'Clock News sketch of Rowan Atkinson and Mel Smith hosting an edition of Panorama about Origami, and how to create it using an old edition of the Radio Times.

Whenever I think about Panorama being hosted, it's RICHARD Dimbleby that I think of in the chair.
Those really WERE the days before anything was dumbed down.
