Media Guardian writes...
The BBC is poised to announce that Jeremy Vine will be the regular presenter on the revamped Panorama when it moves to its new Monday night BBC1 slot.

Vine will be named tomorrow as the new face of Panorama, which will move to having a main presenter top and tailing individual reports in its new 30-minute format, according to sources.

Maybe they could have called it "Tonight with Jeremy Vine" Laughing

Dumbing down is not a phrase I like to use, but in this case I think it sounds justified. Panorama was always fairly heavyweight

(EDIT: sorry, It's from Media Guardian)

where did you get this from - isn't it fair to accredit your sources (a media website in this case, I suspect)?

Personally I think Jeremy Vine should be locked in a cupboard and left for dead. Is there any chance of that happening at all, or just the Panorama thing?

Sounds appalling, I'm hating the new style of promos for the programme as well, the concerned 'what does it mean for you' stuff...

Seriously, the phrase "dumbing down" should be banned from this forum.

Most people don't actually understand what it means and just apply it to any situation they perceive to be worse off than a time they remember when things "were better" (in their own view).

Panorama changing it's format to be more appealing to a wider audience: questionable, maybe. Dumbing down, no.

He may present a programme on Radio 2 now, but remember he did present Newsnight for a number of years.

Whether or not other members like or dislike the term "dumbing down", shortening Panorama from forty-five or fifty minutes to only thirty is, without doubt, dumbing down the news and current affairs content of BBC One.

Without getting into a major English debate about terminology, surely extending the programme by 3 hours would be "dumbing down" if the content were compromised. Perhaps I'm playing devil's advocate here, and usually I do, but perhaps in some situations compressing the programme would get rid of the waffle used to drag out an otherwise-exhausted item. How can you place the emphasis of "dumbing down" on time and time alone?
