Former Cheers actress Kirstie Alley is to play the lead role in a US version of hit BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley.
Alley, 56, will star as a preacher who returns to the small town where she grew up as a teenage rebel.

The Fox TV network will make a pilot of The Minister of Divine - co-produced by Vicar of Dibley creator Richard Curtis - before deciding on a full series.

Dawn French took the lead role in the UK version, which will end on Comic Relief night on BBC One on 16 March.

The final two full episodes of The Vicar of Dibley came top of the British ratings for the Christmas period.

The Minister of Divine is one of a number of new comedy pilots that will be made later this year. But only the best will be made into a full series.

Since Cheers ended in 1993, Alley has had roles in comedies Veronica's Closet and Fat Actress, which chronicled her battle to lose weight.

Yes it is safe to say it will either work or it will not.

You've pretty much covered all the bases there.

Why don't we make british versions of american shows?British Friends would be interesting.

This isn't a comedy but the british should make their own version of power rangers. The power rangers are really japanese but the americans use american and New Zealand actors and splice japanese clips in.Surely we could do that.

How many UK sitcoms over the last 10 years have been billed as the British version of Friends - Coupling being the most obvious comparison (which was remade for the US and flopped spectacularly!)

Vicar of Dibley is just too British IMO to work in America - and religion is a whole different ball game over there!

Haha is that a fact?! I wondered why the actual 'Power Rangers' bits looked so cheap and cheesy (which is what Japeneese TV looks like, even today) compared to the actual spoken actors bits.

If you want a British version of Friends by the way, just watch Coupling. Even the characters are basically the same, like Jane being the crazy whacky one, just like Phoebe Smile Joey being obsessed with women, just like Patrick. Monica being the anal one, like Susan. Ross being the geeky one, just like Steve. Should i go on? Laughing

Back on topic, apart from The Office, every US/UK Comedy import has failed hasn't it? Only the US version of Coupling ever made it to air recently, and that got cancelled after 4 episodes. Mostly because it was the UK script with all the comedy taken out Rolling Eyes

There's been many threads over the years which have listed US>UK and UK>US crossover shows. Its an extensive list.

Laughing I meant to write more.

Judging by past attempts I would say it will fail, I just don't think the Americans will do it right. It'll probably be the support cast that will let it down, the UK cast will be hard to beat

I think there's a chance it could work, I mean there's the people who work on the UK version working on it.
