I myself have got some of these lying about and have intended to make use of it in this way. Though there's not much that can be done about heads that have succumbed to past wear Mad , I ought to get round to cleaning the head of my Beta to see if it does give any benefits...

Watch out that the head cleaning sticks haven't started to degrade if you have had them for a while, I've heard that they can cause more damage if they are old!

Picked them up around mid - late last year if memory serves...

Yeah they are great but I have an LG DVDR and it's so hypersensitive to the tape noise I often end up having to unplug the damn thing as it freezes up. I've got a scart (VCR) to scart (DVDR) situation going on atm.

The best way around this is if you have a mini DV cam with an input on it, or you can borrow one. First, capture everything to DV tape, then record it to DVD from there. Certain cameras like the Sony one I have on permanent lend from my brother (DCR-TRV20E - very old now) have a sort of time base correction and will sort out the left to right wobble you get on the picture with old tapes too. They don't cope well with picture roll though and you will get some picture break-up sometimes.

As an example, the BBC2 clock with the picture background at http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/bbc2national/bbc2national1979.html , would not wobble left to right but be pretty much rock solid if it had been recorded on that camcorder first.

Even multi-generation tape copies can be recovered like this, as long as they haven't been copied via some digital method like DVD or DV along the line somewhere.

Yeah, I may look into the purchase of a (cheap) DV Cam sometime. Cheers.
