its a while since i had to know this, so excuse the lack of jargon. im sure there must be stuff on tinternet bout it - but by only transmitting 1 sideband (as both sidebands are identical), and a vestige of the other you use roughly half the bandwidth you would otherwise. its virtually impossible to extract a sideband cleanly, so the remnant of the other sideband is transmitted and extracted in the receiver using a high pass filter.
