Channel 4 has moved to a new suite with a new mixer and new automation software (replacing HORAS which they've used since they launched). They've had one or two teething problems over the past couple of weeks..!

They've been using the same software since 1982!?

The trailers for E4 had Ali G sitting in a suite with a Compass-style SSD screen behind him, presumably E4 have newer equipment

Well, I saw the fault, and judging by the way the picture cut away and a news feed appeared, my guess is that the tape was being played down a circuit (poss from the edit suite) and a CAR (CCA or MCR or whatever you want to call it) or BT switched the circuit in error. I am guessing the tape is played from The Television Centre to Horseferry Road when delivery is close to TX.

We rejoined the programme as if it had been running in the background and we missed the section during the breakdown, no winding the tape back. C4 Pres may have done that if they were in total control of the situation. Had it been an automation problem I suspect the tape wouldn't have continued running, a server event would probably reset, and with a mixer fault you would EM cut the source directly to air. My money is on a comms fault.

I also thought until recently, C4 used IBIS automation and ICON for commercial opting, but I've never been there and wouldn't steak many beers on that one.

They used ICON in the days when the ITV companies put the ad breaks in. Now that all the adverts come from Horseferry Road they probably don't need to use it (except possibly for S4C)

Apparently so, although it's been updated to take into account developments such as interactivity, AFDs, 625-line etc.

I believe so (until C4 moved on the 5th of November).

I don't think the tape ever makes it to C4. Smile

Eh? I thought Channel 4 started in the early 80s; surely it's always been 625-line?!
