Curtain falls on the Kelly Show

Finale marks the end of an era

The curtain is coming down on one of UTV's most popular television series after 17 years.

The Kelly Show is set to end in December with a huge finale to mark the last ever series and the end of an era in local television.

However, presenter Gerry Kelly will be back in the hot seat in 2006 with a brand new peaktime weekly series.

And Gerry will also be taking on a new Sunday show on UTV's new radio station U105, which is being launched this November.

Although UTV are saying little about the new television show, it will feature more in-depth interviews conducted by the presenter.

Gerry said: "Plans are well underway for my brand new peaktime weekly television series next year which I am confident viewers will enjoy every bit as much as Kelly.

"The new show will have more in-depth one-to-one interviews and a new approach.

"But that's all I'm willing to reveal for now, for the next few months it's business as usual on Friday nights at 9pm."

Gerry said he was very proud of the Kelly series but felt the time was right to get his teeth into a new project.

"I have some fabulous memories of taking the show to New York, Hong Kong, South Africa and all over Ireland.

"I've interviewed everyone from presidents to paupers - the who's who of the past 17 years - and it has been a rich and wonderful experience.

"The series started back in 1989, at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and, for a long time, we were bringing big name international guests to Northern Ireland at a time when nobody really wanted to come here.

"I feel privileged that viewers throughout Ireland have been tuning in year after year and continue to enjoy Kelly.

"I am looking forward to some great shows between now and Christmas."

Alan Bremner, director of Television, UTV, said: "The Kelly Show has been UTV's most successful and longest running series.

"We are all a little sad to say farewell to it but Gerry is the star of the show and his plans for a brand new programme in the New Year are very exciting."

A pity - though I thought the writing was on the wall ever since ITV first moved News at Ten. Before that Kelly could be aired without affecting the ITV primetime lineup. Ever since then though UTV have been losing a night of ITV primetime network programming which they are paying for and that really couldn't have gone on forever. That it survived until now is testament to the programme's popularity (and remember, it has been up against the Late Late Show on RTÉ for most of its life).

Sorely missed it will be - except probably by Pat Kenny, who now has Friday night all to himself...

17 years - must be a record for a UTV show.

Kelly has had its up and down moments.

But is it just me thinking it's more to do with UTV plc's cutbacks in its TV department?!?

Whatever next - no more School Around the Corner? No more UTV Live at Half Five? No more idents of sheep in fields?!? Smile

Did this show ever get a chance on the ITV network?

Scottish Television showed it for about six weeks in the early 1990s.

Those programmes ended with the "An Ulster Television Production for ITV" caption.

As rare a sight as tits on a bull.

I remember when Scottish showed The Kelly Show, it was the 1992-1993 season and STV showed a time-delayed version of Kelly.

Althought I don't remember seeing the ITV generic endcap at the end of the programme, probably because I was either watching Channel 4 or asleep whenever Kelly ended.

ONLY when it ended?

I can't remember ever watching an episode of Kelly all the way through at home, but probably did when I was at someone else's house.

I doubt UTV will replace Kelly with anything new, I'm coming to the conclusion that UTV are starting to back down on making new programmes; apart from UTV Live and RPM, I have yet to come across something original they are showing at the moment. They are even showing Carol Vorderman's Better Homes in the 7.30 regional slots!

Plus, it looks like next week or the week after, they'll be back to showing aeons-old episodes of Harry Hill's TV Burp, out of sequence and for no apparent reason.

According to the UTV Press Office in the document entitled "Programme Highlights on UTV this Autumn" they will be making some new programmes. Here's a little excerpt from the article:

Quote:
Plus UTV will show the best of local programming. Alan Bremner said: “Popular property programme Home Sweet Home returns for a second series presented by husband and wife team, Mike Nesbitt and Lynda Bryans. With 12 programmes in the series, everyone from those building a dream home to those restoring an old gem are featured. There’s also Feng Shui, foreign monks, flat pack furniture and even a body in the garden!

“Jenny Bristow enjoys the blue skies and blue seas of the South of France in her new series Jenny Bristow - A Taste of Sunshine . Jenny brings a taste of the French passion for food to our screens with a huge range of wonderfully fresh Mediterranean ingredients.

“And there’s also see a new series of last year’s highly successful A Day in the Life .
