UTV Trailer narration

UTV need a makeover - not a graphic makeover but a voice makeover. If you listen to the voices to the UTV team between shows, Introducing a show, voicing over an advert/trailer etc, they just don’t have the impact.

Last weekend I was over in England watching ITV, and there voiceovers are great.. They have the deep voices for movies, and serious dramas. An example is Making Waves, the UTV narration of this tailor is dull and boring however for ITV it’s very different - You may not have the chance to hear the difference but I can ensure you there is a BIG difference.

UTV need to get rid of the ‘OLD’ voice over and employ new fresh young voices.

Just my opinion

Getting anyone in to do them would cost money, and that's not something UTV are fond of.

Yes I've noticed this and I think SMG do it or did it as well.

Whereas ITV's trailers from the NPU have different voices matching whatever it is they are advertising, serious, upbeat, male, female etc, UTV just has the same generic northern irish voice doing them all.

It's particularly bad when you consider they are reading ITV's script which was meant to be read in a certain way, and can compare with the way it was meant to be done during the ad breaks of GMTV and Overnight

SMG do exactly the same and it all sounds so flat comapred to the NPU voices.Audra Cunningham is the worst offender at UTV she just droans on and has no particular impact and sounds very flat and i have a funny feeling that she MAY be doing some promos at Five at the moment too .Or it's someone who sounds exactly like her .

UTV KNOW where I am Wink

Seriously, UTV's voiceovers may ot have the same impact as the network trailers, but at least it's an attempt at enforcing a local identity for a local station on screen.

As for the announcers, UTV haven't recruited a new announcer for almost eight years. They have potentially good announcers (Robin Taylor and even Julian) but because of the dirty ITV1 feed and appearing to have no script, UTV's continuity efforts, when they make an effort, are wasted.

Most of the time I think UTV's continuity links lack imagination, enthusiasm and interest, a typical link usually goes: "Programme X is in half an hour, now on UTV, Programme Y". Personally it doesn't compel me to stay tuned to the next programme, but if it succeeds for hundreds of thousands of others, who am I to criticise?

I don't think Audra Cunningham-Thomas is the voiceover on the five trailers...

The woman who voices-over trailers on UTV has also been heard not long ago doing some previews/trailers on BBC Radio Ulster, and I think I have also heard her narrating a programme or two.

I don't know who she is though.

Her name is Laura Hughes.

She's also done voiceovers for BBC NI schools programmes, can't think of the title for it.

Totally OT, but I just heard I've got a new job at the PA, I'm absolutely blown away, thought I'd share my good news with you all Very Happy

Press Association, in Howden, East Yorkshire, starting 9th August.

I'll become part of the team sub-eding TV listings for all the major newspapers Smile

Lots to sort out before then, first of all a place to stay over there...

That's great. Much of Yorkshire outside of the main towns and cities is lovely. Looks like there's one hotel!

Maybe you could have word with the 'Daily Star' which still shows the old Scottish Television thistle ident in its listings - including in the edition that sells over here - HOW many years after its demise?

Well done Col. Yes, maybe if we supply you with the logos (though I'm sure you can make them up yourself!) you can have them all corrected very soon! And at least it can now be said, "So now on BBC ONE Northern Ireland, in a change to Colm's listings... here's something else..." Laughing
