New look to bring it in line with ITV (October 2016)

Does anyone know or even heard of a suspected move date. I hear the end of June was mentioned but could it be the middle of may or start of June?

I'm inclined to assume that the title will ultimately become ITV News Northern Ireland, but probably not for at least a couple more years yet. Calling it UTV News rather than UTV Live between now and then takes it a small step closer to that.

That’s the sort of comment that was quite popular about a decade or so ago.

How may times did we read that Meridian would become ITV News South and the like?

It’s obviously going to stay as currently, like all the other legacy regions have.

As Inspector Sands has pointed out, no current ITV plc regional news title has the legacy "HTV" name in it anymore (nor "Westcountry" as a single word, as opposed to the the purely geographic "West Country" ). So, there is a precedent for not all legacy names necesssarily surviving intact.

I find it difficult to believe that the the ultimate long-term goal isn't going to be replacing all mentions of UTV with ITV eventually. In which case, the regional news would surely become "ITV News <something>". By the same logic that e.g. "ITV News HTV" was clearly never going to happen (as it looks/sounds utterly daft), surely neither would e.g. "ITV News UTV". Therefore, a purely geographic suffix - just like with West Country - would be the most logical alternative.

With most other legacy names (such as Meridian etc), there isn't/wasn't the same "problem" as with the HTV name. Different solutions for different regions, depending on what the legacy name is/was.

UTV no longer gets the same curtosey mentions that STV does within certain network programmes. I choose to interpret this as one of the first glimmers that the name will be gradually played-down / phased out in the years to come. Slowly slowly catchy monkey. I am willing to be proved wrong, but I just can't imagine ITV plc wanting anything less than fully-assimilated branding in the long run.

That's not a courtesy mention - that's a contractual obligation that STV and UTV negotiated when they became affiliates of ITV in 2012.

STV sued because they were aggrieved by the fact that ITV Plc were using ITV Network programmes to promote ITV Plc's digital media only.

With UTV now a part of ITV Plc, that requirement is defunct, because UTV no longer stands to lose revenue as a result of promoting ITV.com.

Why? That hasn’t happened anywhere else.

It happened in Wales and the West, but only because there wasn't a geographic name and 'ITV News H' would have been stupid. Unlike the 3 or 4 other non-geographically named news programmes which worked

That change happened in a much earlier era though, and by the time they started with the current branding, HTV had been long gone.

I would say that had HTV stuck around much longer we could have ITV News: HTV News now.

The fact it’s called ITV News: Channel TV, not ITV News: Channel Islands supports this idea.

Yeah, the HTV News brand bit the dust as soon as the generic news titles were introduced. Back in 2004!

It's only called "ITV News Channel TV" to avoid it being called "ITV News Channel", for obvious reasons.

Personally, I think "ITV News Channel Report" would have been a better name.

The odd one I always thought is 'ITV News Calender' that's not a region, a company name or a geographic reference. I know it's a well known brand in Yorkshire, but I really surprised that's not been changed yet

Well, there is no term equivalent to e.g. "West Country" or "East Anglia" (etc) that means the combined Yorkshire/Lincolnshire/northern Nottinghamshire/northern Derbyshire/N-NW Nofolk area! So, what title would you suggest?

It's presumably because "ITV News Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, some of Lancashire, the North Midlands and North Norfolk" could be seen as a bit of a mouthful

But it's the best option, as it also covers north Derbyshire, north Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and around the Wash area of Norfolk.

Of course at 6pm the announcement says "Now the ITV News in the Calendar region"

Calendar as a brand has always been so prominent in the various regional programme titles rather than Yorkshire. (Good Morning Calendar, Calendar Countdown etc)
