73.4% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

And yet 50% of it is now below average.

I think 0% of non-enthusiasts of TV look outside whole Europe will care about the fate of UTV.

UTV is dead. I do not know why ITV keep the UTV name. UTV is now 95% ITV branding with the token gesture of keeping the UTV name. It is bound to go soon, as did Channel Television in the Channel Islands.

I'm not sure why people keep feeling they have to shut down all discussion in this thread by making this statement over and over again.

A lot of things might not exist in two years, but it is still discussed for what it is now.

It's as 'alive' as Tyne Tees, or Grampian is.

Was it any more 'alive' under UTV Media ownership?

The difference with Channel is that the ITV (and before that ITV1) brand was brought in many years before they were taken over by ITV plc.

As an aside, West Germany's most-read TV listings magazine Hörzu published East German TV listings, but for many years, it identified the service as "Ostzone Fernsehen" ("Eastern Zone Television"), rather than give its official name. Later on, it referred to "DDR" (German Democratic Republic) Television, with the "DDR" always in quotes.

Meanwhile, the East German TV listings didn't mention West German services at all.

Obviously "DDR" and "GDR" were total misnomers - hence why the country was usually given its more neutral geographical title in English-speaking territories - but am I right in thinking that it was called that at least partially because the more usual terminology for Communist states was tainted by association? i.e. "People's Republic" would have had to be "Volksrepublik" which would have sounded too similar to the Nazi obsession with "Volk" and all that went with it (yes, yes, I know, two faces of totalitarianism, but that's not how they saw it), and "Socialist Republic" might also have been considered unsuitable because "socialist" was part of the Nazis' full party name?

I know that people from one particular area of East Germany had a reputation for being far more gullible and naive and far more likely to believe the state's propaganda line because the topography made reception of West German TV impossible.

Frankly, no. Not in recent years. UTV is looking considerably more polished and professional than it ever has done. I'm actually quite liking the general look and feel of the channel. We even have overnight continuity announcements and UTV-branded idents - something we never had under UTV Media. That's a level of attention that pleasantly surprised me. Yes, it's pre-recorded but who cares? There's no disputing, it all looks well and fair play to ITV and Ericsson - they're doing a pretty good job.

Although I'd be quite happy to continue with a UTV brand under ITV control, I still do believe UTV's days are numbered.

Oh... it has happened again. No UTV logo on the ident before the news... it's an itv logo.

Is it really an accident?! It seems to be an itv logo whenever they introduce the itv news.

I think that the UTV Live late news was "almost" in HD.

I know that the CSO backdrop is normally in HD, but the camera on the newsreader is fuzzy SD. But tonight (admittedly it's the first time in ages that I've watched it) it looked like the newsreader was in HD too! Frank's weather was certainly still SD, and the graphics all appeared to still be SD too.

Not a lot to get excited about, and rather odd of them to upgrade one camera... especially as they are moving next year.

Talking of the move... I drove past the City Quays 2 building over the weekend, and the UTV floor of the building was completely illuminated (all other floors in darkness). I wonder if the technical fit out has started yet?

Maybe they wanted to update to a pro studio HD camera (or a different model) for the staff to train on prior to the move?

There was a station in Seattle that only had one HD camera (that went out in HD) but that was in the late 90s. Also oddly atleast two ABC owned stations before they made the big switch to full HD studio presentation had broadcast their helicopters in HD while the rest of the broadcast was 4:3 SD.

Also in the US many stations forgot to budget their capital expenditures for getting everything in HD while forgetting the graphics system. You get this nice sharp new HD production system only to forget to or delay installation of the graphics engine. It’s also annoying when the graphics were designed in HD and with HD in mind.

Maybe they wanted to update to a pro studio HD camera for the staff to train on prior to the move?

Saw on UTV Live that UTV is commissioning more local programming in 2018 so itv investing time and money into it then.
