UTV rebrand

New look to bring it in line with ITV (October 2016)

However, I agree with Brekkie - I think ITV is comfortable with the UTV brand and even sees its regional identity as an advantage. It is a distinctive area politically but more importantly to them it's also distinctive commercially (ie certain brands not available there, and also some only available there).

The UTV brand was distinctive enough for ITV to completely revamp it and make all the branding and presentation more closely resemble that of daddy ITV. Might their cunning plan be that if it looks so similar to 'ITV' now, people will care and notice even less when that UTV logo morphs into an ITV one at some point next year? I think so. People on here continue to overvalue the currency that is the UTV brand. ITV will use this transition period to understand if the elements they removed back in October have any impact on viewing shares. In spite of the small audiences here, I suspect they still care about the ratings. Every penny counts! And the answer of course will be that viewing figures will not be affected. For some unknown reason, more viewers here seem to watch ITV (sorry, UTV) than in any other ITV region. It is has absolutely bugger all to do with the UTV brand.

I suspect that the UTV brand will be no more when they 'go live' from their new Belfast HQ. However, between now and then, I fully expect UTV on-air branding to be dismantled bit by bit. For example, I suspect we'll see ITV-branded trails before the year is out.

Already happened. The Voice trailer only mentioned itv and had the itv logo at the bottom. I assumed it was a mistake but it is ran on a regular basis.

Most of the other trailers are UTV branded though.

We see the itv logo so much now we just regard utv and itv as the same thing really.

At no point did I say the UTV brand was distinctive - I was making the case that the broadcast area is distinctive enough for ITV to deem it viable to maintain a separate brand.

At least until ITV changes its corporate logo again anyway. Which is bound to happen a few years from now.

Fair point. I read your post rather hastily. However, if you are asserting that ITV think the broadcast area is distinctive enough to maintain a separate brand, as a long-term arrangement - well, I'd disagree with that. The UTV brand will almost certainly be killed off completely during 2018, if not before.

I wouldn't set that short a deadline, that's next year. It could last until 2020, but no longer. The ITV logo changed in 1989, 1998, 2006, and 2013. That means they lasted nine years, eight, seven, then four and counting. The current logo won't survive longer than another four years based on past history.

The current ITV logo/branding is very strong and will, I believe, be around for quite a while. I would not link the demise of the UTV brand with a refresh of ITV's corporate branding. The UTV brand will have been long gone by the time ITV takes the decision to update its corporate branding.

Really? Hmmm. You have a different idea of 'strong' to me. As far as I am concerned ITV's branding epitomises bland, corporate non-entity. Although BBC1 has taken boring to the next level in 2017.

C4 has a very good set of promotional graphics. C5's aren't terrible either.

A brand name being well known and highly recognised doesn't necessarily mean it will be kept after a takeover, as history has shown with some well known brands, which had transitional logos (with the old name and new logo), prior to rebranding with the new name. A couple of well known examples which spring to mind are Midland Bank and Abbey National.

For this reason, I wouldn't be surprised if ITV were to drop the UTV brand sooner rather than later, especially given that it's now got a transitional logo.
