Continuity announcers reading news is a blast from a previous era too, which UTV News bulletins do they do?

Peter Griffin is doing more and more newsreading on Westcountry these days. His career was actually boosted by the end of local continuity.

And I suppose you can add Kerrie Gosney's weather presenting for GMG North stations.

Do the UTV Continuity Announcers not have the choice to do IVC or just voice over an ident.?

The way UTV works is certainly strange -- Robin and Gillian are both perfectly capable and experienced at providing IVC, so why don't they do it? Is it because they present the news as well?

Perhaps that's the case, maybe they don't have the perceived same level of popularity as Julian, maybe they aren't fussed... it seems that Julian is the star, and the other announcers may have no other choice but to be subservient.

It seems that even Robin Taylor has also decided to give up the option of doing IVC, which is a shame - he is the only announcer who really puts in any effort to make UTV continuity interesting and attractive; Gillian comes close, while the rest rely on stock phrases or just roll out the schedule list. I feel sorry for Robin and Gillian that they no longer get the recognition they deserve.

Yes I know what you mean. Two years ago Robin did IVC on Christmas Day before Julian came on duty that evening. Last year he was on duty again in the morning with no IVC and sounded absolutely miserable! This year there was again no IVC from Robin and he was only marginally happier than last year!

In defence, last year one of his colleagues did have a family bereavement around Christmas, so it's most likely he was probably more reserved/sombre than what he usually was.

Weeknight late bulletins are read by the continuity announcer, as are all of Saturday and Sunday's bulletins.

Is Marc Mallett actually a Continuity Announcer or a News Reader - I don't think I've heard him on announcing duties.

Yes he was announcing today and frequently does Thursday evenings as well.

do they newsread on the same shift as announcing, or on different days?

Does Julian read the news?

The announcers at UTV read the news bulletin on the same shift that they provide continuity links. Up until 1999, it was common to see an announcer do in-vision links and read the news on the same shift, but nowadays the only time the other announcers (Gillian, Robin, Aidan, Sarah, Marc and Lynda) are seen in-vision is when reading a UTV Live/UTV News bulletin on their respective shifts.

When Julian joined UTV in 1984, he read news bulletins as well as doing programme links, but he stopped doing that in the early 1990s when he became better known for doing the Coronation Street links. He has read the odd newsflash/news report since then when he has been on duty, and did read a UTV News bulletin last April, but Julian is the only announcer at UTV that does not also present news bulletins. He has stated on a documentary made about him that he does not like the serious bits such as reading the news.

Could be - although it never stopped the Granada announcers who did both.

HTV Wales too - the CA used to read the morning bulletins.

Most stations did in the IVC days IIRC -- although the number of bulletins they were involved with decreased over the years. I remember as a child in the late 1970s the TTTV annos used to read the news for virtually every bulletin bar the main news at teatime. The practice only stopped completely in the North East around 1990-91 -- and on one or two occasions Kathy or Bill did go over to the news studio (Bill Steel of course being a veteran journalist in his own right -- he really should have moved back into the news department).

Still, there is no real reason why one person can't do both -- someone at UTV must have made an executive decision to kill off IVC but no-one wants to get rid of Julian.

Also, UTV still don't bother with live continuity during the day on weekdays, and even when there's an announcer on duty, it's apparent that the announcers have no other option but to ad-lib/use the TV Times to whatever length of ident that runs, which isn't their fault if the TCs can't properly time when to opt-out from the network feed. At least twice over the time I've been at home for the holidays, a continuity announcement has been cut mid-sentence to crash back into the network. This issue MUST be addressed, the duty announcer must be able to know how much time they have in advance to plan their links rather than take pot luck.

That's really not the case - they do know how much time is available as it's decided in co-ordination with the network schedules released sometime previously. The only way they would be "unsure" is if there were network changes or if UTV decided to start messing about with their junction. The only thing I can think of is that UTV's transmission setup is so dodgy that by the time they get to the ident there have been so many pauses/gaps that the time on the ident has been eaten into and has to be cut back to get back onto the network feed in time.

Has Audra left UTV now.And does anyone know if Gillian and Robin and co can do IVC if they want or is it Julian that is allowed to do it.

I'm sure Steve or someone else will have a better idea, but I believe Audra hasn't been on duty for around nine months, not sure if her departure from UTV has been officially confirmed or not.

I expect Julian will be on duty in his tux tonight - and give the blokes on duty behind the scenes a shout-out after midnight Smile
