Once again, Brain Box was cancelled tonight and the movie 'Blue Crush' was shown instead. They obviously still haven't sorted out their techincal problems yet!

As well as the It's all about U promo that I posted above, there's an extended 60 second version of it airing as well and a news promo with the tagline 'Your First Choice for News'. I've uploaded all three to YouTube:

BrainBox originates from the old Thames studios at Teddington. At the moment, it's scheduled to run for a 1 month trial, until the end of August.

Rising my head above the parapet, but with BrainBox, aren't UTV jumping on the bandwagon three years too late? I am surprised they didn't spin off Watch to Win into a phone-in quiz format.

Also think even trialling BrainBox smacks of contempt by UTV for its viewers. It's happy to axe almost all its own programmes but is more than willing to commission a late-night phone in quiz which isn't even made in NI.

As for the news trail, definitely a case of style over substance. If using a mish-mash of Arial and Lucida Sans is your definition of style.

They're really just copying TV3 which started its own late night phone-in quiz format, PlayTV, which is running in more-or-less the same slot. Its' appaling brutal car-crash TV of the worst kind and apparently nearly impossible to get through. The Regulator of Premium-Rate Telecommunications Services, REGTEL, has been asked to investigate but apparently TV3 have broken no laws by providing the service. The BCI seems happy to let them proceed with this crime against Irish broadcasting though.

Found an old Newsletter from 1991 in my granda's house there the other day and it had a pull out feature about the tall ships including this little advert for UTV...

I remember the TV trail for UTV's coverage of the 1991 Tall Ships - voiced by Pamela Ballantine. The things that stick in my head for 18 years. Laughing

On a similar theme, a report from the time on the Tall Ships visit to Belfast featuring a dark-haired Clarky can be seen here.

And a short video for UTV's 50th anniversary here.

More Brain Box technical problems last night. At around 2:10am the programme dropped off air, replaced with a BT tower slide and the test tone. It then cut to a static slide with the UTV logo on it, staying like this for about 3 or 4 minutes. A pre-recorded apology by Pamela Ballantine was then played and 'alternative viewing', as she put it, was played in the form of the programme "Home" AGAIN! The programme only played for about 2 minutes and then another apology played saying that we could now return to the programme. Brain Box came back on air for about another 5 minutes and then finished at its scheduled time of 2:25am.

Here's an edited video of the whole thing, however I apologise in advance for the Virgin Media error message that is plastered all over it! For some reason this message appeared during the recording last night and was still there when I woke up this morning! I know you can't really see too much because of it but at least you can hear the audio! Laughing

From BroadcastNow, the word on UTV's Autumn schedule:

Quote:
Ultimate Ulster will return to UTV this autumn, as part of the Northern Irish ITV franchise holder’s bid to build on its original programming slate this autumn.

Indie Televisionary will produce a second 10 x 30-minute series of the factual show, which is hosted by Frank Mitchell and explores ten top places in the region as well as the people, food and sights that make them unique. The first series, which aired in 2007 was the best rated Thursday night programme for the channel across the year.

In addition, environment indie Evergreen Media will make a 1 x 60-minute special on Ulster’s forests to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the plantations, and a fourth series of Hidden Heritage with a run of 4 x 30-minutes.

A second 4 x 30-minute series of The Fabulous Food Adventure has also been ordered from indie Edge Films, and Green Inc will produce the 6 x 30-minute series Glorious Gardens.

Managing director Michael Wilson said the channel was committed to working with local indies to provide UTV viewers with popular regional programming.

Apart from Ultimate Ulster, very short runs of series there. So far, the article has sparked comments about how UTV is now relying on independents for non-news programmes - which is a point; when was the last time anything except UTV Live was a UTV production? IVC doesn't count Wink

And also just found out the sports series Graham Little has been working on for Sky Sports will be hosted by his ex-colleague, Claire McCollum.

Anyone noticed the advert that's been playing recently trying to sell advertising space on UTV? It's quite good actually! I've uploaded it to YouTube:

It's not actually UTV's advert, it's an ad by Thinkbox which has been set up to promote advertising on most commercial broadcasters.

Aaah didn't realise that, just seen the full version on the Thinkbox website. UTV have chopped off the last 10 seconds or so to add in their tagline instead of the Thinkbox one.
